Bette Elliott Obituary

Bette Normile Elliott
April 6, 1919 - May 26, 2014
Walnut Creek, CA
Bette (Elizabeth) Normile Elliott, age 95, passed away peacefully on Memorial Day, May 26, 2014. Thankfully, her family was there comforting her as she took her last breath. Her wishes were to be cremated and placed with her husband's remains, in the Garden of Memories at the CHAPEL OF CHIMES, Oakland, CA. Robert Victor Elliott died on his birthday, Christmas Day 2002. We believe they are together again in heaven, joined by their family and friends who predeceased them.
Due to the onset of dementia and wheelchair bound, she spent the last four years of her life at the Pleasanton Nursing and Rehab Center. Our deepest gratitude and respect go to the amazing nurses and staff for all of the love and care that they gave to our Mother… and for the incredible support that they provided to us. We will forever be grateful to them and their selfless dedication to those in need.
Bette (Elizabeth) was born in San Diego, CA on April 6, 1919. She was the middle of three sisters born to Lillian and Eugene Normile of Point Loma. Her father was a prominent sports figure (boxing and horse-racing) in San Diego. Bette attended the Academy of Our Lady of Peace from K through H.S. During her youth she became an expert equestrian, participating in english riding competitions throughout So.Cal. She attended USC, joined the founding chapter of Gamma Phi Beta and graduated with a B.A. in Fine Arts in June 1941.
After college and during WWII, she worked as draftsman for Convair Aviation before joining the Navy Waves in 1943 with her best friend. At the end of the war in the Officers Club, she met a handsome, decorated Marine Lt. named Bob Elliott. He was recuperating after being severely wounded on the 2nd day of battle on Iwo Jima, for which he received the Purple Heart. They were married six months later on June 1, 1946. Their son, Patrick was born in 1947 while Bob finished his Engineering degree at UCLA and UC Berkeley. Janet was born in 1952 in San Diego.
Bette became an avid golfer and at her prime shot consistently in the high 70s. While the family resided in various cities due to job transfers, Bob and Bette were members of Almaden Country Club, Englewood Washington. Villages in San Jose and most recently Crow Canyon. They enjoyed golf together as well as Bette becoming active in the 18-hole women's golf association.
A private family gathering is planned later this month at Chapel of the Chimes. She is survived by her son; Captain Patrick Elliott of Virginia, his children; Elizabeth Elliott of Altanta, GA and son, daughter-in-law, grandson Bo, Gayle and Patrick James Elliott of Manassas, VA… and her daughter; Jan (Janet) Elliott Smith, her husband Corky (Dennis) Smith and their son's Bradon Elliott Smith and Brett Cameron Smith.
