Catherine C. (Cathy) Markham died peacefully at home with her family by her side on Tuesday, May 14, 2019. She was 95 years old. Born to Lucca and Hilda (Peterson) Gianunzio in Lakeview, California, in 1923, Cathy was a first-generation American. The family ranched in southern California. She moved to Fort Bragg in 1946 with her then husband and helped operate the Staser family-owned Fort Bragg Steam Laundry while raising four children.
Cathy and her husband, Donald Markham, purchased the Colonial Inn in 1959 and operated that successful business for forty years. Their son, Jon, completed the family.
Cathy was an active member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West (1948), the American Legion Auxiliary since 1950, the Rebekahs Lodge, and the First Presbyterian Church, also from the '50s. She was a life-long 'Eisenhower' Republican who voted for the first woman candidate from a major party for the U.S. Presidency. She was a patriot and an institutionalist.
Cathy was known as a kind, loyal and encouraging friend, dependable in all her community commitments and retiringly modest about her own considerable accomplishments. She was proud of her family and heralded all their achievements. Cathy loved animals and became a steward to any in need who crossed her path. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Cathy was preceded in death by her husband, Don Markham, and her four brothers. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Janet Staser, Marta Staser Weber (Michael), Karen Staser, Charles Staser (Sherry), and Jon Markham (Cindy); her grandchildren, Jessica Staser Albere (Jay), Marlon Cox, Sharon Cox Crandall, Julie Cox McCarty; her nephews, Victor and Jerry Gianunzio; her great-grandchildren, Aaron Schallock, Brendan and Ellie Cox; numerous cousins and other extended family members.
Internment will be private. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 1 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather at the family home in Fort Bragg directly after the service.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. There are no words that can ease the pain of losing someone so beloved. May you find comfort and peace in knowing that your loved one is in God's memory, because those who fall asleep in death are precious in his eyes. Psalms 116:15

Cathie shared coffee, treats and friendship to me and my dogs every morning for years, and in fact one of cats decided to go live with her as he was outnumbered with us. Our times with her are sorely missed. Our thoughts are with her family which they have made me feel a part of.
