David VanSchaick Obituary

David Llewellyn Van Schaick, a gentle man, died suddenly at his home in Chester County, Pennsylvania following a lengthy stretch of cardiac and cancer related issues. He was a resident of Palm Beach, FI and Malvern PA. David, a classic car collector and investor, bought his first old car in 1964- a LaSalle convertible- followed by a 1929 Ford model A pickup. His collecting progressed and encompassed several Bentleys, Alvis’, Bugattis, Aston Martins and a Gull Wing Mercedes. A David Brown tractor and a Studebaker pickup truck rounded out his collection. Among some of the many highlights of David’s five decades of collecting were a 1929 4.5 liter Bentley which he drove on several race tracks in the US and in Europe as well as on the Vintage Bentley annual rally and on the the Colorado Grand Tour. He owned a 1935 Aston Martin 2 Liter Ulster, a rare 1965 Aston Martin DB6 Shooting Brake, a Bugatti Type 57 and a Bugatti 35c which he enjoyed racing until 2011. David was the Vice president of the Aston Martin Owners Club for a decade and he was an active member of both the American Bugatti Club and the Vintage Sports Car Club of America. His time spent at rallies, concourses and races were the happiest for him. His friends on these circuits will always remember his shenanigans. David graduated from Blair Academy and Rollins College and then earned a masters degree in Landscape Architecture from Syracuse University. He was a member of both the Radnor Hunt Club in Chester County, PA and the Bath and Tennis Club in Palm Beach, Florida. David was born in Easton PA in 1937 to Loretta and C L Van Schaick, who was the Chairman of the Dixie Cup Company. The Van Schaick ancestors were among the first Dutch to settle in New York State in the 1600’s. David was married to Margaret Van Dyke Trout Van Schaick for 42 years until her death in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Wylene Righton Commander, his sons, David Lewellyn Van Schaick Jr., Pieter Trout Van Schaick , their wives Amy Van Senus Van Schaick and Suzannah Zeit Van Schaick, two step children Charlton Baker Holladay, Belton Commander Baker, and five grand children. A private graveside service is planned. In lieu of flowers kindly consider a donation in David’s name to the Brandywine Conservancy, 1 Hoffman Mill Road, Chadds Ford, PA. 610-388-2700.
