Age 84, of St. Paul. Hubert passed away peacefully on January 31st, 2018, surrounded by family, after a courageous battle against Alzheimer's disease. Preceded in death by his cherished wife, Karin; mother, Louise (nee Zeland), and father, Hubert Sr. Survived by adored wife, Zuyi Gu. Loving father of Daniel (Mary), David and Julia Sawyer (Stephen); beloved grandfather of Blake Sawyer, Rachel (Nate) Moline and Samuel Walczak (fiancée, Rachel). Hubert is also survived by brothers Thomas (Bernice), Michael (Joann) and Lawrence, as well as many other relatives and friends. Dr. Walczak, a distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of St. Thomas for 33 years, was awarded the honors Teacher of the Year , and Professor of the Year . He was a revered teacher for thousands of students, many of who went on to distinguished industry and academic careers. His classes often began with weather anecdotes & statistics; he most certainly would have been an accomplished meteorologist. His warm smile, gentle demeanor and kind words persisted throughout the brutal effects of memory loss. His passions for jogging, poetry, ethnic food and classical music were incomparable. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to St. Joseph's Hospital, family friend Angela Jacques and to his many other caregivers over the past several years. Zuyi has been his guardian angel and has given him her unconditional love and unwavering care every step of the way. Mass of Christian Burial at 11am, February 8th, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Eagan. Visitation from 4-8pm February 7th at Bradshaw Funeral Home, 671 S. Snelling Ave. St. Paul. I had pleasure meeting Dr. Walczak back in 1998 when I first came to St. Thomas. He already retired but continued actively participate in the life of the Mathematics Department. His sharp and elegant solutions to tough Putnam Exam problems were quite impressive. I also enjoyed his broad and erudite knowledge of world classical music and literature that he shared generously. I will miss him!!

I had the honor of being a student in Dr. Walczak's class in the mid 70's. Beyond his best efforts to teach me about math, he took the time to teach me some things about life and effort that I never forgot, and made a transformational impact in my life. I deeply regret not taking the time to thank him personally for what he meant to me. Peace to his family and friends. We've lost a really good person.

Hube was one fine gentleman and friend. Since college days at St. Thomas College we shared many interests together. We enjoyed camping canoeing, tennis, music, chess, Laurel and Hardy, movies. etc. He will truly be missed. What a wonderful guy!

What a wonderful and caring teacher he was for so many St. Thomas students.
He helped many learners with the inricacies of mathematics and even made it fun to do....that's a skill possessed by few math teachers.
Rest in peace, Prof. Walczak.....
