ELKVILLE -- John R. Carrel, 80, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at his residence.
John was a retired diesel mechanic working at Consolidation 5 Coal Mine. He was of Baptist faith and a member of UMWA and Du Quoin American Legion Post.
He served as a PFC in the U.S. Army.
John was always willing to help anybody at anytime.
He was born Sept. 5, 1933, in Denmark, the son of John Samuel and Sarah Leona (Moore) Carrel.
He married Diane Dyer on May 10, 2007, in Pinckneyville, and she survives.
He is survived by his wife of Elkville; children, Terri Ahner and husband, Karl, of Dowell, Russell Carrel and wife, Lana, of Des Plaines, Michael Carrel and wife, Teresa, of Elkville, Lisa Lipe of Oklahoma City, Okla., Lori Rainwater and husband, John, of Du Quoin, Jim Derby and wife, Teresa, of Troy and Jason Derby and wife, Carol, of Du Quoin; seven grandchildren, Scott Rees and wife, Kacey, of Dowell, Mi-chelle Mann of Mount Prospect, Teresa Carrel of De Soto, Ashley Carrel of Elkville, Jacob Rainwater and Erica Rainwater of Du Quoin, Adam Derby, Taylor Deby of Troy, Andrew Derby and Brooke Derby of Du Quoin; and six great-grandchildren, Dylan Rees, Kaytlynn Rees, Peyton Rees, Jonathan Ress and Harmonie Keebler, all of Dowell and Brianna Worley of Mount Prospect.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Ronald Carrel and Duane Derby; one brother; and one sister.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Sept. 9, in Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Donna Blythe officiating. Burial will be in Cottom Cemetery in Denmark. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Du Quoin VFW, Du Quoin American Legion and Army National Guard. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Friends may make memorials to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.
