John Alton Reed, Jr., 83, of Sapphire, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Transylvania Regional Hospital in Brevard. A native of Washington, DC, he was the son of the late John Alton and Emma Ball Reed. Mr. Reed received his undergraduate and Juris Doctorate degrees from Duke University, Class of 1953. Members of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Mr. Reed and his wife Louisa retired to Transylvania County in 2000 where he loved the mountains. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Louisa W. Reed; daughters Donna Reed of Portland, Oregon, Joanne Reed of Fairfield, Iowa and Debbie Martin and husband Craig of Naples, Florida; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
