My heart goes out to each of you - what a loss to the beltie world and how under appreciated his great knowledge of the early days of the breed in this country! I will miss him greatly as his belief in what we are doing and his support has been invaluable. We mourn his loss as we celebrate his life and the gifts he shared with us. Hugs and prayers for you all!

My fondest memories of Toby are sitting outside Ketter Hall, come rain or shine, sharing a cigarette. We discussed anything from teaching, mechanics of solids, hockey, Louis L'Amour, Toby's family, his time at Princeton, his farm in Vermont, my son and family. Toby was incredibly generous with his time, his experience, and yes, his cigarettes. He was an amazing story teller. He seemed to relive the moments as he told the story many years later. Certain stories would always bring tears to his eyes; he was a very passionate and sensitive man!
I have really missed these cigarette breaks in the past couple of years since his retirement. Clearly not for the cigarettes, but for the chance to peak into the heart and mind of a truly caring and committed teacher. Some of his stories I have repeated to my students, and will continue to do as long as I teach.
My heart goes out to you, Patti, and the rest of Toby's family. He was a wonderful man, and a great mentor.
