Mary Helen Schmitz

of Mount Calvary - Mary Helen Schmitz of Mount Calvary, Wisconsin passed away peacefully on her 96th birthday, February 28, 2021. In the days leading up to her death, she was surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff of the Villa Loretto. She was born to Albert and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Schrage on February 28, 1925. She attended elementary school in Mount Calvary as well as 2 years of secondary school known as "Pete's Academy" in Mount Calvary. She also played basketball with a local girl's team and was a member of a harmonica band in her youth.

Before her marriage, Helen worked at Wells Manufacturing in Fond du lac, where she met several lifelong friends. Helen married Ambrose "Sam" Schmitz on June 14, 1947 at Holy Cross Church in Mount Calvary. Together they ran the homestead farm of Sam's family.

Above all, Helen enjoyed time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her greatest joy was to spend time with the youngest ones, playing peek-a- boo, chasing games and cuddling them. Her pastimes included birdwatching, gardening, walking, and golfing. Her interest in old movies was present in the many scrapbooks she made as a young person using wallpaper sample books. This continued into her later years as a huge fan of Turner Classic Movies, often staying up late into the night.

Traveling and vacationing with Sam, numerous friends and family was a special interest of Helen's, including places such as Ireland, Alaska, Hawaii, and going "up North." She especially loved time with family at her sons' cabins and cottages. At the Villa Loretto, she could often be found spending time with the goats, bunnies, kittens and dogs. Helen was a member of St. Isidore Parish-Mount Calvary Church, and the Christian Women's Society.

Survivors include her children, Tom (Jan) Schmitz of Mount Calvary, Cathy (Troy) Schmitz Couillard of the Minneapolis metro area, Nick (Bonnie) of Sheboygan, 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren; sister Judy (Paul) Runkel and brother Robert Schrage; two sisters in law, Mae Schmitz and Donna Schmitz. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Helen is preceded in death by her husband Ambrose "Sam," her son, John and daughter-in-law, Janice; infant grandson, Jeff; parents, Albert and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Schrage; brother Charles (Violet), sister Myrtle, sister Margaret (Vern) Holzmann and numerous additional brothers in law, sisters in law and relatives.

A special thank you to all the staff of the Villa Loretto for their amazing social support, nursing expertise and loving care during these last 5 years of Helen's life, especially during this very challenging pandemic year.

A memorial mass and celebration of Helen's life will be held at a later date in the summer.
