ROY E. BOHLANDER SR., 91, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2021, at his residence, surrounded by his family. Born July 28, 1929, in Fort Wayne, he was a son of Andy and Ruth (McMil lan) Bohlan der. In his youth, he helped his parents in their bait and tackle shop on Clinton Street. Roy also helped his younger brothers and sisters, played several sports with the Fort Wayne Parks League. He attended North Side High School, where he ran track and field. In 1947, he enlisted and proudly served his country in the Navy, during the Korean War. Roy was honorably discharged in 1951. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 43. Roy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Decatur. After being discharged, Roy married the love of his life, Bonnie Scheimann on Dec. 29, 1951. He was still holding her hand when he took his last breath. Roy was a carpenter by trade, founded and Co-owned Bohlander Construction with his brother, Lee. In 1991, he retired as a Superintendent for CME. Roy has trained many people in the construction field, over the years. After retirement, Roy enjoyed going to the lake with his wife and spent a lot of time fishing. When that was no longer possible, he took up his easy chair and watched westerns, sports, game shows, but no matter whathe always had time to help his kids! Roy was a dedicated, loving and generous husband, dad and grandpa. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bonnie Bohlander of Decatur; two sons, Michael E. Bohlander of Willshire, Ohio, and Roy (Ed) Bohlander Jr. of Ohio City, Ohio; two daughters, Kay (Tony) Fry and Ann M. Bohlander, both of Decatur; a brother, Lee I. Bohlander of Fort Wayne; a sister, Ila (Ron) Korte of Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Joan Jones of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Jeff Roop, Justin Roop, Mindy Scott, and William Fry; and six great- grandchildren, Daniel and James Roop, Moon, River and Shadow Bohlander and Eli. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Sue M. Bohlander; three brothers, Joe, Dan and Jay Bohlander; brother-in-law, Art Jones; and most recent, his niece, Laura Spencer. "We miss all of you!" A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father David Ruppert officiating. Roy's death was not related to Covid, but masks and social distancing will be required, per the family. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with Military graveside rites by American Legion Post 43 Color Guard. Memorials may be given to St. Vincent de Paul Society or Masses.
