I was the first grandson in my mother's family (Gandini), so I got a lot of attention. When I was three years old my mother's sister, Aunt Della, taught me to recite 'The Night Before Christmas'. She did this by reading the poem to me over and over, until I had it memorized. She probably bought this children's book for me. Then, she moved to California for a few years to be with her husband, who was in the Marines. When I was in the first grade she came back. She walked along the sidewalk I took to go home from school. She wanted to see if I would recognize her. Of course, I did. I always thought my Aunt Della was the prettiest girl. Even today, 68 years later, when I see a pretty girl, it's because she reminds me of my Aunt Della.
