Joe.. Thank you for being the ABSOLUTE BEST grandfather and Father In Law anyone could ask for. You were truly the dad I never had and you and Jane exemplified true love & commitment. You were an extraordinary man in every way and an incredible role model to all but especially my 3 boys, your grandsons Matthew, Mark, & Michael. You helped them see & understand love, commitment, and the importance of family in a way that will continue to be with them for life. Of all the amazing things we have learned from you and you have given to us, that is our most precious of gifts❤ For this, I am FOREVER grateful. Regardless of where we have been, you have ALWAYS been and will continue to be in my heart, thoughts and prayers. Thank YOU for everything Joe, but mostly for loving me and your grandsons with all your heart and a special thanks for all of our laughter! You always said that I added "spice" to the family and always made you laugh ... THAT brings a HUGE SMILE to my face.. and I can see your warm, affectionate smile looking right back at me. You will be dearly missed. Love you Joe.. Just the mostest❤

Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Messana family. No doubt that Joe left a legacy of love and kindness as his children and grandchildren so ably show everyday. May God be with all of you.

May we continue to honor and respect all the lessons we have learned; acting as living symbols of a loving spirit. You are in our prayers.

Joe served as my deputy superintendent at Oakland Schools for most of my years as superintendent. The individual serving as deputy superintendent retired a few years after I came there and I had to find a replacement deputy. Person after person came to my office and suggested Joe for this role. He was described as " intelligent, a person of high standards, a highly ethical individual, a highly principled individual" and many more encomiums. He was all of these.

He was no "Yes"man. If he disagreed with a position or planned action, he was clear and firm in his view. This attitude was invaluable and saved me from more than a few egregious mistakes.

After I retired we became lunch buddies, having a meal together in Troy every few weeks. Only recently did those meetings end. He wasn't well and we decided to wait bit before we got together again. I will miss those meetings more than I can describe.

Gerry and I are pained that we cannot be at the funeral. We are in Florida until April 11. I would come alone had not Gerry fell two weeks ago and broken a bone in her pelvis. She needs me with her as she attempts to negotiate two airplanes to get home.

Thank you, Joe, for all you have meant to me. You enriched both my professional and personal life.
