I guess "Can do") and " and "Don't back down" pretty much describes my sister, Winn. She could hold her own, but she also was a loving and dedicated daughter
Winn was eight years older than me and I do not know when she had been
afflicted with polio, but she had had it as far back as I can remember. I do remember seeing a brace that she had worn some time before.
I don't remember anyone in the family indicating that she was handicapped.
I guess this is what made her have such a determined nature. I never her say that she couldn't do something because of her handicap. She seemed to know that she could do anything anyone else could do.
She was dedicated to our mother and took care of her in her waning years. She would talk about her in a very loving tone.
When I came to visit Winn, I enjoyed talking to her about the old days. We didn't have much, but we had some very good times. And now it is sad that I will no longer have anyone to talk to about the family.
I feel so bad that I was unable to attend her funeral, but I'll tell you my heart was there.
I will miss her and will think of her often.

If Winn had said she coined the phrases "Can do" and "Don't back down", I think I would have believed her!! She was such a strong willed woman - through all her illness. Winn was a singer of songs, a teller of tales, and had a tremendous sense of humor. Thank you, Winn, for the trust and affection you showed me and all the Winn-foolery through the years. And thank you, too, for letting me get to know your generous, kind and courageous daughter, Colleen. You became my Aunt Winn...you became family. Love you forever.
