BATTISTE, ANITA
Anita Battiste, age 80, of Gainesville, Florida, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at Reflections Care Center in Northfield, Minnesota.
Anita was born July 31, 1937, the daughter of Ralph and Mary (Ringoli) Luise in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Girls' Latin School in Boston and continued her studies at Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia where she received her bachelor's degree in Chemistry. Anita then studied at Columbia University where she received her master's degree in Chemistry. She was married to Merle Battiste and the couple lived in Los Angeles for one year before moving to Gainesville. Anita went on to receive her second master's degree in library science at Florida State University in Tallahassee. She worked as a reference librarian at the Marston Science Library at the University of Florida until her retirement. During her career she was very active with the Special Libraries Association and was a President and Treasurer of the Florida & Caribbean chapter.
Anita was an avid reader and was a member of many book clubs as well as the Jane Austen Society North America-Florida. She loved volunteering for many years as a docent at the Florida Museum of Natural History and Butterfly Rainforest Museum, which she especially enjoyed showing to her grandchildren. Her hobbies included needlepoint and crocheting.
She is survived by two sons Mark of Gainesville, John (Susannah Ottaway) of Northfield; two grandchildren Alex and Audrey of Northfield; and a brother Robert (Evelyn) Luise of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Services will be held Saturday, May 26th at 2 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Gainesville. Memorial gifts can be directed to the Florida Museum of Natural History. Arrangements by Bierman Funeral Home.
