Mrs. Gertrude Nix Reed died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018. She was born on July 13, 1923, in Cleveland, Ga., to John Luther Nix Sr. and Tannie Westmoreland Nix. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Coleman Reed; and her son, Tommy Reed. Gertrude was the last surviving sibling of her family.
Gertrude started her career in the cosmetology business in 1947. During her career she owned and operated two beauty shops named for her daughters, Gloria and Anne. In addition to her beauty shops, she and her husband owned and operated Reed's Department and Variety store on the Square in Cleveland for many years. In her "retirement" years, Gertrude continued to enjoy being a hairdresser at Creative Styles and The Cutting Edge, where she served as a mentor to the young stylists and enjoyed staying youthful and always classy.
Gertrude was a devoted mother and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was affectionately known as "Mama G." She is survived by her children: Gloria Payne, Anne Reed, Susan Dunn, son-in-law Randy Dunn, daughter-in-law Anne Reed Rickman and her husband Claude Rickman. Grandchildren: Suzanne Payne, Jake Dunn, Anna Cole Rickman, Michelle Carroll. Great-grandchildren: Lindsey Whitmire, Will Whitmire, Aj Parris, Ansley Parris, Kaylee Carroll. She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law and dearest friend, Sarah Nix, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at the chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Doug Merck and the Rev. Dennis Turner will officiate. Burial will be at Gateway Memory Park.
The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
