Millis Frederick “Fred” Mulkey Jr. Obituary

Jan. 7, 1937-March 13, 2018

Millis Frederick "Fred" Mulkey Jr., 81, of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Lee Koontz, the Rev. Shon Peppers and the Rev. Paul Evans will officiate.

Born on Jan. 7, 1937, in Chattanooga, Tenn., Fred was the son of the late Millis Frederick Mulkey Sr. and Jewell Hegwood Mulkey. He graduated from McCallie School in 1954 and from Michigan State University in 1958. After graduation he returned to Chattanooga to join the family business, M & J Supermarkets. In 1969, he moved to Gainesville and began his career in sales. He was a member of Rotary Club of Gainesville and recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. For almost 50 years Fred was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served joyfully in their ministry of music; he was highly instrumental in establishing the Morning Light Worship Service.

It was Fred's love of music and enthusiasm in sharing it that most people will remember. From teaching children's guitar lessons, to bluegrass, jazz and the big band sound, his joy was visible. All who knew Fred Mulkey seem to have their own music memory and can attest to his steady kindness and gentleness.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Mulkey is preceded in death by his daughter, Sally Mulkey.

Mr. Mulkey is survived by his wife, Marty Crawford Mulkey; daughter, Meg Mulkey Gallagher (Matthew) of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter, Jeannine Mulkey Callahan (Dr. Michael) of Gainesville; daughter, Erin Taylor (Richard) of Gainesville; sister, Jeannine Hurley of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jack, Sam and Grace Gallagher; Kate, Meg, Sally, and Mary Michael Callahan; Riley and Brady Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, Ga.
