GASTONIA - Frances Martin Turner passed away peacefully on December 13th, 2020 at the home of Jeanelle Costner. She was 92. Born in Gaston County on December 5th, 1928, she was preceded in death by parents, Lunnie Mae and Howard Poteat, and sisters, Mildred Bumgardner and Lois Myers.
Before retirement, Frances worked at Burlington Industries and Garlock. After retirement, she was a seamstress for Poffie Girls Bridals and did custom alterations for many in Gaston County. She sold Avon for over 50 years, making the President's Club many times. She was a member of the Lucille Tatum Homemaker Center and Gastonia's Chapter 382 Woodman Of The World. She bowled in a league for many years until her health declined. She loved to dance, fish, travel, and spend time with her family.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Syble Latta (Bob), Gail Smith (Mike), Jeanelle Costner (Larry), all of Gastonia, and Debi Morris (DuWayne) of Mill Spring; son, Joe Neal Martin(Sandrine) of Mooresville; and brother, Bobby Dean Poteat (Jean) of Stanley.
In addition to her parents and two sisters, Frances was preceded in death by one grandchild, Natalie Costner, and two great-grandchildren, Mary Dismukes and Serena High.
Frances was lovingly called Maw Maw Turner by her 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren (one on the way), and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Frances had a special place in her heart for her granddaughter, Holly Costner, who stayed with her, kept her company, and sat by her bedside daily.
Mrs. Turner will lie in state from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm Thursday, December 17, 2020 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia. Funeral services will be held privately for the family, with Pastor David MacEarchen officiating. Interment will be at Gaston Memorial Park.
