Roland Oswald Obituary

Oswald
Roland Keith "Ozzie" Oswald
December 14, 1933 - January 25, 2018
Roland Oswald passed away January 25th, after a long illness. He was born December 14th, 1933 in Bruning, Nebraska to Simon and Irene Oswald; the third of five children. Roland is preceded in death by his parents, and sisters, Betty and Bess. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Betty Ann; sons, Randy, David, Richard, and Kenneth; grandchildren, Amber, Cassie, Dean, Jessica, and Christopher; great-grandchildren, Hanna, Jewell, Braylin, Stetson, Roland, Omari, Mac, and Paxton; and brothers, Robert and Jon.
Roland grew up in a farming family in the small town of Shickley, Nebraska. He graduated from Shickley High School. Raised in the Mennonite faith, Roland was required to spend two years in public service. He and his best friend came to Denver working as orderlies at Denver General Hospital, fulfilling that commitment. It was there he met his future wife, Betty Ann Locke who was completing her nursing degree. They married in September 1956, moving to Arvada where Roland worked for Canteen.
The family moved to Hartsel, Colorado in 1962 to operate South Park Mercantile before settling in Colorado Springs in 1964, with Roland again working for Canteen. He later took a job at Package Delivery Service. PDS was bought by UPS making Roland one of the original two "UPS Men" in Colorado Springs. Roland worked for UPS until his retirement in 1995.
Roland had many interests. He enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and golf. He worked as a Kairos prison minister sharing his faith with prisoners around the state. He was an avid woodworker, creating beautiful scroll-saw crosses that he gave to friends and family.
Of all Roland's interests, the three most important never changed - his family, friends, and faith. He gave himself completely to each. His generosity and love were returned many times over in his final days. Roland passed away at Pikes Peak Hospice surrounded by the family and friends he cherished in life. We will miss his kindness, patience, and quiet devotion.
The family would like to thank everyone at Pikes Peak Hospice for their wonderful care.
A celebration of Roland's life will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, February 3rd at First United Methodist Church. A reception will follow the ceremony.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice or First United Methodist Church.
