The Reading dentist confirmed as one of the missing passengers on the doomed Air France plane which disappeared over the Atlantic was described as “a poppet” last night by the mother of one of his patients.

Brazilian Dr Jose R Souza was a consultant for The Orthodontic Centre in Erleigh Road and had worked in the town since 2005.

Yesterday the Brazilian embassy in Paris confirmed Dr Souza was on its list of missing passengers on board the Brazil to France flight AF447 lost on Monday.

Sarah Mathews had a call yesterday morning from a teary receptionist at the centre to cancel her 14-year-old son Sam’s appointment.

She said: “I was called at 8am with the news that Dr Souza was missing presumed dead on the doomed flight.

“I was totally shocked.”

Mrs Mathews said: “Sam was his patient for five years and we knew him as a gentle and truly professional man who went out of his way to make Sam always feel comfortable and took a general interest in his well being.

“We are both shocked at this tragic news and can only hope that maybe he might have made it but in all reality that is unlikely.

“We as a family and, especially Sam, who is a Year Nine pupil at Little Heath School, wish to send our thoughts to his family and colleagues who can only but wait for news.

“He was a poppet and will be sorely missed. What a waste of a young man who was highly regarded in his profession. May the angels carry you to heaven and forever hold you safe.”

Dr Souza wasn't my orthadontist, but when mine was on maternity leave he took off my braces. It was the only time I met him, but he was so lovely - even when I accidently bit his hand!

Dr Souza treated my daughter, she has a lovely smile! He was quiet, gentle, lovely eyes and smile. We were surprised when we first saw him as he was so good looking! And a South American in Reading!, as am I. Still sad after so many years to learn how he passed away with his lovely Isis. May they always rest in each other's arms, happy and in love. My deepest condolences to his family and friends..

I was one of Dr Souza's patients and can't believe this has happened to such a nice guy. When I saw his picture on the news I was in soooo much shock that I cried! I really hope that Jose and Isis are somehow at peace. I want to send my deepest sympathy to his family, friends and his wonderful colleagues. I can't believe I'm never going to see him again, it's devastating. I will always remember the man who made me feel at ease and who had the most gorgeous smile. I just wish I could say thank you to him one more for everything that he has done for me for the past 4 years. He will be sadly missed by so many people. R.I.P Jose!!!

I met Jose and Isis last september in Tavarua and became their friend. The couple's calm and gentle manners, his wise approach to life and powerful surf made a strong impression on everybody in the island. I firmly believe that although some people cease to phisically exists, they still survive in the hearts and minds of people they touched. I'll always remeber them with great love, keeping their smiles alive in my thoughts.

I had been following the story of flight 447, but it didn't really hit home until I learned of Jose and Isis being on the plane. Although I had only known them for a brief time, people that are as geniune and of such good character as they were, make such an impact on ones life. Its not often you come across people like them, I'm just proud to have had the opportunity to know them.......

One thing I do remember about Jose was that he would go out surfing no matter what the conditions of the waves or weather. He lived his life to the fullest and maybe he knew, you never know when the last time you will be able to surf.....

Jose and Isis......May you rest in peace!!

I was also a patient of Dr Souza for 2 years, I have to admit I was a bit reluctant to get braces on in the first place - starting year 12 in a new college with braces was not what I had in mind! However having my first appointment with Dr Souza completely changed that, he put me at ease. 1 year on and I have lovely teeth thanks to him, he helped me get some of the confidence i've needed for a while.

Going into the orthodontist today was really something. I honestly didn't think that I would feel that sad, but the place is covered in flowers and there is a table with a photograph of him and a book were patients can write condolences. The worst part was walking past the room where I've had all my appointments for the past couple of years.

Rest In Peace Dr Souza, I hope you are happy wherever you are. xxxx

I would not have thought he would have made such an impact in my life and I still can't believe what happened. Thanks Rommel for all your stories and advices. I am going to Indonesia in 4 days and will remember all the good places you told me to go to. You enjoyed every moment of your life and I know you will rest in peace.

Like so many others I also took my son to see Dr Souza for dental treatment. He always spoke quietly and pleasantly. He was lovely.
He touched so many lives. It is a testament to him that so many people have said so many nice things.

The highest compliment I think, you can pay to a man is to say that he was a gentleman.
Dr Souza was, most definately,a gentleman.
My condolences go to his family and friends.

What a wonderful couple and such a tragic loss. My husband and I meet Jose and Isis on the heart shaped island of Tavarua. The couple so lovely and vivacious. What an example for the human spirit! Any photo of them shows their love of each other and their love of life. I cant begin to guess why God has taken such wonderful people from this world but it is certaintly a loss for all of us. I take solice in knowing that in Gods wisdom all is right. I pray that Gods love will ease the loss of their family's and lend comfort to their souls. I know in my heart that Jose and Isis have set a true example of how to live life to the fullest and I plan to praise their lives by following their example. We have all been blessed by being touched by their lives. God Bless Jose and Isis and all the lives they have touched in the short time they were here.

My girlfriend and I met Jose and his lovely lady, Isis, in 2008 while surfing on Tavarua. Jose was very humble and let his surfing do most of the talking. He would always paddle deeper than most and his athletic ability permitted him to pull critical maneuvers over a shallow reef wave after wave. To sum it up "HE RIPPED". It was such a pleasure and honor to have met Dr. Jose Souza and Isis. They will forever be in my prayers.

Isis & Jose - Tavarua, Fiji - September 2008
September 2008 was a great month in my life! I married the girl of my dreams, somehow convinced her to go on a surf trip for my honeymoon, and met Jose Souza and Isis Pinet.
Our lives crossed paths for the first time on a boat, on our way to Tavarua Island, Fiji. Tavarua is home to one of the best waves in the world, “Cloudbreak”, and a five-star resort on a private island in the middle of the pacific ocean…Not your typical surf trip, so it wasn’t too difficult to convince my wife that this was a good idea.tavaruagroup
Tavarua is an invite only resort with a waiting list of about two years. Guests stay on the island with only the people in their group for 7 days. We were with fifteen other couples and a few other stragglers, which allowed every one to become close.
Jose was one of the standouts of the trip! Absolutely tearing cloudbreak apart! I spent a lot of time in the water with Jose, chasing waves up the reef. Jose was a goofy foot, and cloudbreak being a left, was a goofy footers dream. Jose was in his element.tavleft
I recently read that Jose gave up a career as a pro surfer, to be a dentist. His surfing was definitely of that caliber. I look back, and remember every session we had, and how many times guys in the water would look up the reef and see Jose dropping in on a bomb. We would pull up in the channel and jump off the boat, and Jose would paddle straight for the top of the reef, resisting any urges to turn and go on the inside. Most of us would give in and surf the middle reef where we would watch Jose kill every wave he touched. By the end of the trip we called the top of the reef Jose’s reef.jose-and-isis-1

On land, Jose and Isis were a beautiful couple, so nice to talk to, so nice to be around, mild mannered, soft spoken, great in every way. Jose is Brazilian and a dentist in London, England and his girlfriend was French. I would talk with Jose and ask him what it was like being a surfer, landlocked in London. He would tell me he never felt that way. He was a short flight to some of the best waves in the world between Ireland, Scotland, France, Spain, Portugal, and Northern Africa. We talked about NY, the city, the waves, and about Jose and Isis coming to visit.jose_souza_surfing1

June 1, 2009. The headlines read “Air France flight 447 (AF447), an Airbus A330 widebody jet, was reported missing in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean in the early morning hours. The plane was enroute from Rio de Janeiro (SBGL) to Paris (LFPG) with 228 passengers aboard”.
Today, Sunday June 7, 2009 my visit from Jose and Isis came unexpectedly. My wife received an email we never imagined. Close friends in Kauai who were on the island with us, and shared the joy in getting to know Jose and Isis, informed us that they were on flight 447.
My heart sank and tears ran down my wife Colleens cheek as we both tried to comprehend this tragedy, now a week old, which seemed so far away, how it made its way to our doorstep. God works in strange ways, and people are put in your life, even for a brief time, who’s presence will last a lifetime.
Our memories are fond, and we thank god you were put in our lives, WE LOVE YOU, and WE WILL MISS YOU BOTH!

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Our condolences go out to all the families of Air France flight 447.

This guy was a nice guy since i met him in the middle of 80's at our primary school in Niteroi - Rio de janeiro. It is amazing to see how people loved him, but it is not a surprise. He was always this, happy, simple and a nice friend. I almost took the same flight, but postponed a week one month ago. We now could be trying to surf again together in the paradise.
The best for u wherever u are Ze Romminho.

It brings me relief to read these words here in Legacy.com. Dr. Souza was my best friend as we grew up together im brazil and our families were professionally and emotionally bonded. We shared infant and teen discoveries and started surfing together. I missed him a lot when he decided to move overseas, but whenever we had contact with eachother, I knew he was happy with the results he were getting from his beloved pacients. Isis and Rommel I'm strongly sure you both are together and happy and soon we will be together to that surf sessin on paradise.

Dr Souza. Laura had been under his care for the past two years and he was always so kind and caring. We were so fortunate to have met such a lovely man and he will be missed so much. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time. Karen & Laura Kendall

Dr Souza was treating my daughter and had removed her braces only a couple of weeks ago. It was such a shock to hear the tragic news. Even though we only spent a few minutes with him on each visit he was very caring and did a fantastic job, my daughter loves her teeth now. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

i feel really bad because I didn't wear my retainer 100% of the time but now I do, because I didn't want to annoy Dr. Souza.
Im sure everyone who knew him will miss him a lot as he was so caring and kind to all of the patients.

R.I.P. Dr Jose Souza

I am so sad. He was a brilliant person and so kind. I heard someone from Reading might of been on there but I really didn't know it was him. I am so sad I remember him so well and he will be so greatly missed.
I really hope a miracle can happen just this once. xx

My family was so shocked to hear about Dr Souza. Both my sons have been under his care over the past 4 years, & it was always an enjoyable experience as he was such a lovely, caring man who we had complete faith in. He will be sorely missed by us, & our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends & colleagues at their tragic loss.

My son has been a patient of the centre since last year and although he was not treated by Dr. Souza I have found all the staff at the centre to be friendly and professional. It must be a great shock to his colleagues, family and friends. I was really upset when I found out the news this morning of Dr. Souza's tragic loss. He will be sorely missed.
