A former councillor of more than 25 years has died following a battle with cancer.

Alan Spratling, who represented the Hillside ward in Earley before standing down at last year’s Wokingham Borough Council election, died on Sunday.

Councillors at tonight’s full council meeting at the civic offices in Shute End will hold a minute’s silence in honour of their former colleague.

Mr Spratling, who was in his late 60s, was a Liberal Democrat and was a former council leader.

He leaves behind a wife, Elaine, and two children.

So sad - I worked with Alan many years ago and moved to Reading when our company relocated there from London. I remember good days both socially and in business too. Sincere condolences to Elaine and his family

I knew Alan through his daughter Joanne and saw him a few days before he sadly passed away. He was a great guy and did a lot for the local community and will always be remembered and sadly missed,he had a good sense of humour too. My thoughts are with his family,Elaine, Joanne and Phil at this very difficult time.
With deepest sympathy, Bill Coward.

Very sorry to here that Alan is no longer with us. We crossed swords in Woodley a number of times, but I know he shared my commitment to the people of Woodley. My sympathies to his family.
