I guess Diane and I had a history together. I seem to remember in Bible School between Kindergarten and first grade that she came up and kissed me...not once, but several times. There were a lot of "ooooh"s from other kids, and I didn't know what the heck was going on.

In first grade, we happened to be desk partners. I'd like to think I helped her read (I was a seasoned veteran of reading by then), but I can't remember that. We visited each other's houses when our addresses were both 1311 (different streets, of course!).

Then I switched schools.

Then I switched back. By that time, she was just another girl in the class. We did have to stay together after school once in Junior High (tardiness was punished with 15 minutes for the first--and my only--offense). She went to West Michigan Christian high school, and I went to Grand Haven.

We had a class get-together in about 1981. She wasn't there, but I was able to connect with her by 1982. She had been into body-building, and I'd have to say she was quite successful at it.

Then there was an open house at the Christian School when the entire grade-school wing was rebuilt, and she was there, with her mother, sister, and daughter. The daughter looked exactly like I remember Diane from first grade! That was the last time I saw her.
However, one time, not too many years ago, I met her sister (a year older), quite by accident...she was a teller at Fifth Third Bank, about to retire. It was then that I heard that Diane was deteriorating...Alzheimer's, we just found out, in addition to Parkinson's. Gayle thought she might recognize me at that point, but we never got to find that out.

She was, I think, the youngest person in our class, 15 days younger than I.

I'd give you a kiss now if I could, Diane Vriesman Ferwerda...may you rest in peace and joy.

Diane was a wonderful volunteer at Alpha Women's Center. She was always willing to help, to listen with sympathy to a client, to reach out with God's love in any way she could. She impacted many lives.
