Jirtle, Dorothy Dorothy Elizabeth Jirtle, age 84, was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, February 18, 2021. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Helen Bates; Mary Bates (birth mother); husband, Elmer Jirtle; and grandson, Eric Jirtle. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Steven and (Kim) Jirtle, Scott and (Tammy) Jirtle, and Todd Jirtle; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four siblings; nieces, nephews, and many cherished friends. Dorothy was a lifelong educator, with a Master of Education from Grand Valley State University, and a retiree from Grand Rapids Public Schools. She dedicated her life to the Lord by serving her church in teaching, music, and the study of God's word. A private family funeral service will be held in the near future. Additionally, the family wishes the public Celebration of Dorothy's Life to take place in the spring, with time and date to be announced. In honor of Dorothy and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family welcomes memories and messages in their guest book online at

Our deepest sympathy to Steve & Kim, Scott & Tammy and Todd. You were the best neighbors anyone could have. Have lots of good memories - sitting on the deck at night and talking, also good memories of the cottage era. Praying God's peace, comfort and joy knowing she is with Jesus.
