Lovett, Michael E. Michael E. Lovett, of Trufant, MI, was born on March 11, 1945 in Lebanon, IN. On January 4, 2021, he went to be with his Lord. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sandra Lovett, on December 20, 2019. Also preceding him were his sister, Gail Lovett; brother, Dale Lovett; parents, Robert and Margaret Lovett; and brother-in-law, Jim Reno. His is survived by his sister, Ann (Philip) Gano; and sisters-in-law, Vera Lovett, Kay (Mike) Ireland, Rita Reno, Robin Reno, and Patti (Barry) Wheeler; and also many nieces and nephews. Mike taught at Union High School in Grand Rapids and Sandee taught for the East Grand Rapids School District. Mike and Sandee spent their summers camping and traveling throughout the United States in their motor home or navigating the waters of the Mississippi River or the Great Lakes in their boat. Newfoundland dogs became a passion in their lives; they raised and loved many "Newfs". Utilitzing their teaching skills, they taught water rescue, draft work, and obedience to hundreds of owners and dogs. Their smiles and friendships will be remembered and cherished by many. A celebration of their lives will be observed at a future time. My sympathy to Mr. Lovett’s family. I never had him for a teacher, but I was a cheerleader at West Middle for 9th grade and remember him. He had the corner classroom on the first floor. He was known for his antics. I did not take his class because I knew he went to the gypsum mines and I am claustrophobic. I remember him from the hallways and always engaging with the students. He was well liked by many May he Rest In Peace.

Fabulous teacher and person. Ran into him about 10 yrs ago in a store. Recognized his voice “Mr Lovett?”. We ended up talking in the parking lot for quite some time, reminiscing old times at West Middle.

Incredible man and teacher. How he inspired students was an incredible gift. I remember his pipe, his smile, his picking up an apple off your desk, cutting off a piece and putting it back and never missing a stride. So many memories that I will cherish.

Mr. Lovett was hands down, my favorite teacher at West Middle School. I swear, I can remember more "Mr. Lovett" stories than I can recall from any other teacher ever. I say that even after 46 years and a Master's degree. He was among the very best instructors I ever had. I am honored to be counted as one of his students.
I will share bags of M&Ms today, in memory of one of the greats!

I was in your Earth Science class at West Middle, where you made learning fun and at times even an adventure. I will always remember your sense of humor and contagious laughter. You and Mrs. Lovett always opened your home gladly whenever I would stop by to visit. You created in me my love for Newfoundlands and am on my 5th one and even owned one of Alcor's offspring. I am proud to call you a friend. Rest in peace until we we meet again.

Mr. Lovett was one of the most memorable teachers I ever had. He had fun teaching, and perhaps his shenanigans would not be allowed now, but he kept our attention. I had seen him at dog sledding events and was glad to know he was happy after teaching. He was one of the good teachers. I am sorry for your loss.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mr. Lovette passing on. He was my favorite teacher. He is fondly remembered for his repeated jokes that he laughed so hard at every time he told them (class after class, year after year! ) and playing “Grandma got Ran Over by a Reindeer “ , everyday through December. I also remember checking blood types in class and one day, one of his students had irregular shaped red blood cells so he made sure they went to the doctor. He discussed this with future classes and explained what he saw as sickle cell.
I have thought about him many many times throughout the years since graduation and would’ve LOVED to catch up with him. Rest In Peace Mr. Lovette, we’ll catch up on the other side. ❤

Looking back on my high school years there are a handful of teachers/staff that had a lasting impact on my life. Mr Lovett was definitely a favorite. I still say halite instead of salt. Loved the pictures of his dogs. The static ball that made his hair stand up. He made even the most reluctant student want to learn. Prayers for his family.

Dear relatives of Mike and Sandee,
I was so saddened to see Mike’s obituary and to also see that Sandee had passed. Her colleagues and friends from East Grand Rapids that I keep in touch with were also saddened. Sandee was an amazing woman, teacher and spouse. Together they were the perfect couple. Thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Mike (Mr. Lovett to his students) was one of the best teachers I had the pleasure of learning from at West Middle and Union High. He made Earth Science fun and exciting and told the funniest stories during our lunch time games of Pinochle. We kept in touch for a few years after I graduated while he lived in EGR, but I lost track since then. My condolences to the family, rest in peace Mikey.

I cannot put into words the impact that Mr. Lovett had in my life! From teaching his passion for astronomy and earth science, in particularly ROCKS! I’m a huge rock hound to this day! His impact on me after making us learn all constellations led me to teach my children the importance of Earth Science and I’m happy to say my son pursued science and is a computer engineer at NASA working on a new expedition to fuel satellites while in space and re-directing asteroids so they don’t impact Earth! I’d like to say, Mike definitely contributed to this!
I will never forget his Earth Science class or his fun teaching style (like NO other) he made learning fun! On the top of my list....gypsum mines tour where he led us deep into the mines with flashlights and then proceeded to have us appear “lost in the dark” we were all panicked, but he had everything under control lol.
I never wanted to miss a GR Santa parade downtown to see him and Mrs Claus dressed up with the “Newf’s”. Oh, I could go on and on but I will close by saying, “Mike, you were by far my favorite teacher” you made the biggest impact on my life and I will cherish these memories forever! RIP
