Joyce Margaret (Fohrman) Aschenbrenner, Laona, was called home by Jesus on Tuesday, March 27, 2012, after a brief illness at St. Claire's Hospital in Weston, Wis., with her family gathered around her sharing funny stories, memories, tears and laughter. She was 76 years old.
Joyce was born in Laona, on July 9, 1935, to Elenore and Herman (Shorty) Fohrman, where she lived her entire life. Joyce entered the work force as a teenager with an after school job as a sales clerk at Connors Department Store. After graduating from Laona High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Jim Aschenbrenner and together they raised their three sons. During that time she was employed by Connor Forest Industries and worked there for 17 years. When the mill closed she worked at the Laona Grocery Store until her retirement. She was a hard working, dedicated employee who took great pride in her work performance. Her work ethics were evident in her home as she was a meticulous housekeeper, and the boys knew better than to bother her on "Cleaning Day".
Joyce was a lifelong member of St. Leonard's Catholic Church in Laona and attending Mass with her family was on top of her priority list. Her greatest joy in life was her children and watching them succeed academically, socially and in sports. She never missed one of Mike's wrestling matches or Gary's football games, and made sure that Larry made it to as many Pee Wee Wrestling tournaments as possible. She and her husband, Jim enjoyed taking the canoe out on the area lakes to gather wild rice. She loved to cook and would spend the entire week planning, shopping and preparing for the big "Pregame dinner" on Sunday. She was the most devoted of Packer fans but really, she loved watching NFL football games in general so the rest of Sunday was spent doing just that. She liked to sew and made all kinds of things. Fifteen years ago, she made curtains for the Wabeno Head Start Program in crayola colors with a different color on each window, and those curtains can be seen on their windows to this day, just as bright and colorful as the day she made them.
Joyce and Jim always had a beautiful vegetable garden. The deal was Jim, planted, weeded and harvested, and Joyce did the canning. She loved to see the finished product; all the different colors of beans, carrots and pickles lined up on her counter. She loved Turner Classic Movies, playing Bingo and the fan blowing in the middle of January. She was a loving, caring, compassionate wife, mother and grandmother who is deeply loved by her family and all who know her, and will be sadly missed.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim; sister, Marlene Kimball; two infant sisters, Mary Jane, and Rita May Fohrman; nephews, Gregg and Jeff Kimball; brothers-in-law, Ray Kimball, Lawrence Aschenbrenner, John Aschenbrenner, Russell Aschenbrenner and Tom Aschenbrenner;and a sister-in-law, Kate Aschenbrenner.
She is survived by her three loving and devoted sons, Mike (Donna) Aschenbrenner, Steven's Point, Wis.; Gary Aschenbrenner (girlfriend, Jody), De Pere, Wis.; and Larry Aschenbrenner (girlfriend, Sandy), Colton, N.Y.; eight beloved grandchildren, Faith Aschenbrenner, Milwaukee, Wis.; Justin Aschenbrenner, De Pere, Wis.; Camron (Sarah) Aschenbrenner on tour of duty in Afghanistan; Morgan Aschenbrenner, De Pere, Wis.; Brandon Aschenbrenner, Chandler, Ariz.; Shane Aschenbrenner, Milwaukee, Wis.; Heather Aschenbrenner, Boston, Mass.; and Holly Aschenbrenner, Utica, N.Y.; one great-grandson whom she liked to brag about, PJ Aschenbrenner, Milwaukee; a beloved sister, Jean (Albin) Chitko, Laona, Wis.; three equally beloved brothers, Ernie (Sally) Fohrman and Jack (Judy) Fohrman, both of Atlanta, Ga.; and Jim (Kim) Fohrman, Laona, Wis. She is further survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. In addition she is survived by three people who loved Joyce and had been important part of her life; Karen Aschenbrenner, De Pere, Wis.; Julie Aschenbrenner, New York; and Jeanie Mertens, Laona, whom she loved as a daughter.
