Summerlin, Carol Morris
June 2, 1944 - October 18, 2021
STONEVILLE – Carol Morris Summerlin, 77, left this earthly life on Monday, October 18, 2021 at Gibson House Hospice.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Madison. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m., Friday at the church. Entombment will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Wilson, North Carolina.
Mrs. Summerlin was born on June 2, 1944 in Wilson County, North Carolina to the late Carlyle Morris and Margaret Williamson Morris. She graduated from Rock Ridge High School in 1962, attended East Carolina University and went on to graduate from Atlantic Christian College (Barton College) in 1966. In 1976, she completed her master's in educational administration from UNC-Greensboro.
Carol's teaching career began as an elementary school teacher in Johnston County, North Carolina, and then she relocated to the Madison-Mayodan area schools in 1970, where she served as assistant principal at Scott-Lassiter Elementary School. In 1976, she became principal at John W. Dillard School and was employed with Rockingham County Schools until 1998. In 2002, she returned as principal of an alternative learning program for Rockingham Youth Services, where she worked until her retirement in 2010.
Carol was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Madison, where she served as deacon chairwoman, Bible school teacher and children's choir director. She was also an active member of the Madison-Mayodan Rotary, where she served as the first female president and district governor.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Terry Summerlin, Sr., and daughter-in-law, Michelle Summerlin.
Survivors include her sons, Gerald Terry Summerlin, Jr. (Myra Propst) of Summerfield and Michael Wade Summerlin (Mindy) of Charleston, West Virginia; grandchildren, Tripp, Kimmee, Dylan, Breanna and Levi Summerlin; brother, Carlyle Morris (Teresa) and sister, Margaret Huey (Larry).
The Summerlin family wishes to thank Brookdale in Reidsville, Camden Place in Greensboro and Hospice of Rockingham County for their attentive and loving care.
Special thanks are extended to her caregiver, Louvenia Gilliam and her many special friends for the consistent love and special care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Madison, P.O. Box 209, Madison, NC 27025 and/or Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
