July 29, 2019
John Havlicek was a Phys Ed intern at my junior high in Columbus, Grandview Jr High, and I worshipped him, Lucas, Mel Nowel , Larry Siegfried and the whole national championship team . It was 63 or 64 and I was very disappointed that he only had us play softball during his time with us LOL .
I went on to star in high school basketball at Miami Springs Senior High In Florida ( grad 67 ) . I'm still a Buckeye fan 70 years later of all Buckeyes sports !
July 06, 2019
To the Havlicek family,
Please accept my condolences for your loss. John came back to OSU one time and introduced himself to the team. As if no one knew who he was. A truly humble guy whom we will miss. I am so sad to hear of his passing.
June 02, 2019
He was first celtic superstar I ever heard of and I was born in the year that havlicek stole the ball. He had superhuman endurance, unselfishness and was the perfect celtic....I was hoping the 2019 team would play like Hondo but they fell far short. There will never be another John Havlicek for us diehard Boston sports fans....RIP to a Ohio St and Celtic legend, Leo Derosia, NH
May 31, 2019
John is my all-time favorite player. He embodied everything you could want in a athlete or person.
I was thrilled to meet him briefly when he disembarked from his flight from Boston to Atlanta in 1972, a very turbulent flight that was shared by my parents.
May 31, 2019
Enjoy Heaven. Fellow Bridgeport alumni.
May 27, 2019
I can't believe John's heart would ever stop. What a class act. He never got famous in his own mind. Honda gave him motorcycle every year and he gave them to his home town buds.

May 12, 2019
I used to go watch celtics play my buffalo braves. After warm ups the buzzer would sound and the players would clear the floor to get ready for the first jump ball. Quickly, just before the start of the game, hondo would drive in to the right side of the basket and make a routine lay up before every game. I thought that was so cool. That was Hondo for you.
May 10, 2019
I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to the family. Words cannot ease the pain of losing someone you love. May the God of loving kindness and compassion console your grieving hearts during this difficult time. Psalms 94:18,19.
May 09, 2019
I followed you from college, to olympics, to the Boston Celtics. When Red drafted you, I waited with the rest of Celtics nation to see if you would decide to play basketball or football. You made the right choice From your first year on, you were a winner. A great sixth man who did not care if you started or not, because you were on the floor at the finish. I was a season's ticket holder for a few years until marriage and children made me give them up. But I never stopped following the Celtics or You. I stood in line for hours to buy tickets to that triple overtime game, the greatest game ever.
You were a joy to watch, and always made me proud to say I was a Celtics fan. The world is a much lesser place without you. God bless you and your beloved family. Rest in peace, YOU WERE THE BEST.

Dear Beth & Family,
I would like to offer my deepest condolences on the loss of John. Let the memories of your life together see you through this time of great sorrow.
Beth I wanted to let you know that you had an impact on the children you taught while at Oakland Park Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio. I believe you taught 3rd grade, because my brother was so lucky to have you as his teacher. Your kindness and caring transcended your classroom. I was older so I didn't have the opportunity to have you as my teacher, but my brother was not the easiest person to teach, but he loved you. I remember the day clearly when we heard you were leaving our school to marry John. We were happy and sad mostly sad. When I got older I started to follow his career he was a fantastic indescribable talent. I could always say to my friends, oh yes he is married to one of our best ever grade school teachers, Miss Beth Evans.
May God Bless You and Keep You All,
May 06, 2019

""Gone but never forgotten'.
May 05, 2019
Just learned of the passing of one of my childhood sports heroes, Boston Celtic John Hondo Havlicek. What an era in basketball history in which he played and thrived. No one out-hustled him on those parquet floors. He made everyone around play harder, on both teams. His was one of the names that made me swoon when I visited the Basketball Hall of Fame last year. A total class act who will always be one of the standards of who winners are in sports history.

May 01, 2019
all I can say he was a class act NBA player. Loved watching him play as I was growing up.
Rest in peace!!
May 01, 2019
I was a Celtics season ticket holder through most of John's career. I will say, the Celtics were a diversion for me, to escape the pressures of high school, college, and early working life.

And John was a hero ... the way he ran his life, the way he played, the way he led his team to victories - and still was a top performer when they lost. He was an inspiration to fans, and his contemporaries (players) and those Celtics who came after him.

Beth, and the rest of the family, my condolences. He'll be missed, but he'll be remembered, long after we're all gone.
April 30, 2019
As a young boy I idolized hondo and attended his basketball camp for two years in 7 and 8 grade. My biggest thrill was making the all star team and being presented a trophy by him which to this day was one of my greatest honors on my lifetime. He should be remembered for the class that he exemplified as a player and as a person. We will miss you terribly and I'm honored that our passed crossed. God bless Kirk Vitello.
April 30, 2019
A true legend RIP!!!
April 30, 2019
He was a very good ball player, may almighty God comfort his family
April 30, 2019
I watched many of your games and you are a class act.
April 30, 2019
My most sincere condolences to Beth and family.
I was a teenager in the '70s growing up in Rhode Island and I became a Celtics fan watching Hondo play. I loved his relentless hustle, constant movement, tenacious defense, and unselfish play. He was very clutch and always got the absolute most out of his abilities. I would always want to be # 17 on any sports team that I played on. There are plenty of the number 17's all over my home and office. The number 17 is on my license plates. I idolized John and I recognized that all these qualities translated from sports to life. John Havlicek has provided me a lifetime of inspiration.
My brother met John in 1984 in Providence and told him that I was a HUGE fan of his and I was to get married that weekend. John graciously wrote me a note congratulating me on my upcoming event and thanking me for my support. That note is framed and hanging on my wall at home today.
I was very saddened by the news.
Thank you Hondo!
April 30, 2019
I grew up in the Kansas City area. When we had the Kings bb team I would go see them when they played the Celtics. John was my favorite. I stood in a very long line to get his autograph when he played here during his farewell tour. One of the best to play the game.
April 30, 2019
He was a HERO of what is good in Basketball Praying comfort for family and friends. No one can take away all the memories you have of this great man ❤❤
April 30, 2019

Prayers and Condolences to John's family.

Growing up in Yorkville, Ohio just a couple miles from Bridgeport, he was the reason I became a lifelong Celtic fan. I even had a basketball game called Havlicek if I can remember correctly. I also made my dad buy me green colored sneakers so I could be like him and the Celtics.

RIP to not only a great athlete but to an even finer gentleman.

Buddy Emerson
April 30, 2019

April 30, 2019
You are a legend, #17. May you rest in peace. My sincere condolences to the Havlicek family.
April 30, 2019
I waited on John when he came thru the receiving door at Triple A Markets in Weston Ma. He was not supposed to do that!! Yes with a 16 or 17 lb. King Salmon, I think. The owner gave him the o.k. too walk thru the back door. (I was just doing the right thing) He told me in a very nice way that he would be picking it up quickly because he had too go somewhere. It was the fastest job on a King Salmon I ever did!! I'll never forget this Beth. I was in La La land for days. May he rest in piece Beth. I believe in was 1975 or 1976. A little later I meet Dave Cowans and he said something to the effect of John sent him. I knew then that I had done a good job for John.
April 30, 2019
We loved Havlicek's outstanding. hard-working, talented, full of heart contribution to the game of basketball. He was a star on the court and off, an example of a life well lived. Thanks Hondo!!
April 30, 2019

April 29, 2019
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. May God's holy spirit be a comforter during your time of bereavement.
April 29, 2019
John Havlicek's Celtics and my Phoenix Suns participated in a game for the ages in June of 76, triple overtime. The Celtics finally won the battle that Friday night in the Garden & then the series two days later....If our magical run in the desert was going to come to an end it seemed ok to lose to #17, the leader and winner who won with class. JH made 1976 special and deserved to return home champion once again..
April 29, 2019
Much Love to the Basketball Legend and much respect to your Family #Celticspride
April 29, 2019
The days I spent fishing with John are some of the most memorable of my lifetime. A great athlete and even a greater human being. RIP my friend!
April 29, 2019
As a kid 55+ years ago, my Dad introduced me to basketball and the Boston Celtics. As I began this sports journey, I was captivated by #17. I watched and admired how he never stopped running and moving with or without the rock. I wanted to be like Hondo, playing both ends of the court and always being clutch. But, there is and will only ever be one John Hondo Havlicek. As I began playing on teams and organized leagues, I had two goals...try to play like Hondo and wear uniform #17. Years later, after Hondo retired, I purchased a complete Celtic home white uniform and full warm up gear. It was such an incredible feeling, putting on the Celtic gear and going out playing basketball. And when I wore that great uniform, the number 17 was stitched on the front and back. No other number would be acceptable. That same jersey now hangs proudly in my sports room, perfectly displayed behind glass. In my own way, I retired Hondo's number in my mini Boston Garden.

All those incredible memories of Hondo, came flowing back when I heard the horrible news of his passing. Tears filled my eyes not wanting to believe what I was hearing as my mind began flashing back to so many of his iconic plays. Then I remembered his retirement and Red stating if he had a son who was like John Havlicek, he would be very happy. I also remembered John's very warm words and his humble appreciation to the Boston throng. A smile came back to my face as I wiped the tears from my eyes.

Hondo walked away from the game as a basketball legend, one of the games all-time greats. Yet, hearing those talk about him, those who knew him personally, they detail a man that was just as much of a giant off the court. Today's athletes in all sports should spend some time going back and seeing all that was John Havlicek. Those outside of the sports world should listen to those who spoke of Hondo the man. In the end, we can all learn so much about life and how to live it the right way, Hondo's way. Hondo truly was a Life Legend.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Havicek family. May God Bless all of you as you deal with this immeasurable loss and may the Great Number 17, John Havlicek, rest in eternal peace.
April 29, 2019
My condolences to the family. John was my quarterback in high school. I was his running back. So many good memories.

Dear Beth,
Met you and John's mom at his first game with the Celtics vs. the Cincinnati Royals. Met John after the game, but he was disappointed in the loss, so we didn't socialize at that time.
Have followed his career from the time he was featured in an article in the Wheeling, WVa, newspaper during his HS football career.
Watching him play with the Buckeyes and Celtics made me proud to carry the family name. What an athlete and sportsman ... thanks to you and your family for sharing him with all of us.
Hope we can determine the family relationship/ancestry sometime in the future. Have always called John my 'Cousin'.
God Bless all of you.

I was assistant freshman basketball coach under Frank Truitt at Ohio State when John matriculated to our great university. At 18 years of age --- it was easy to imagine that John would become a model of grace and perfection in all of his future endeavors. It was a pleasure and my good fortune that I got to know John during that 1958-1959 basketball season. Rest In Peace my friend.

A man of virtue, a man of high character, a man of perseverance, a great family man, a man of humility and a superb Celtic player. I cried on hearing of your death. Was at the Garden for the triple overtime game against the Phoenix Suns and your emotional last game. You where an inspiration in my youth and to this very day. You will continue to be a Role Model for my ten year old son forever. God Bless your family, RIP Hondo, the quiet man.
April 28, 2019
I was 11 when I was watching the Boston and Phoenix game in 1976 on my black and white tv. I was already a Boston fan but after that game and going forward, John Havlicek became my favorite player and role model. As a young kid playing basketball, I tried to model my every move after him. He was such a classy person and I've had both of my son's watch his highlights and they are both Celtic fans now too. RIP "Hondo" You will be missed by all!
April 28, 2019

Later in life I would follow his career in Boston and watch when I could the Celtic games... What a player this man was... tricky, sly, and wiry, always around the action... John could ""shoot the light's out""!!! I sit here on this Sunday morning with a few tears down my cheeks... They just introduced John Havlicek to the court in HEAVEN... GO GETUM' HONDO !!!

Celebrating a life well lived. We will cherish the memories forever.
April 28, 2019
I know the whole Ohio Valley is mourning the loss of one of its own , Lansing Ohio own hometown boy. Bridgeport High school had named the basketball gym after it's 1958 3 sport star. I was there to witness the naming ceremony of the gym John J Havlicek gym , a nice video from his teammate at Ohio State Bobby Knight was shown . In attendance was Johns dear friend and brother from another mother fellow Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Phil Niekro introduced John , they were on the Bridgeport Bulldogs Baseball team together, John class of 1958 Phil class of 1957. John will forever be a Bulldog . He will be Missed !
April 28, 2019
John Havlicek and his Ohio State Team jump started my love affair with the game of basketball. I was 10 and living in a very small Ohio town. My life became all about basketball from that moment forward. I played for 10 years. 6'5'' 205''. Then I coached college basketball for 38 years. It all started with John...,my favorite player!!! My deepest sympathy to the family and to all his fans. Thanks John for helping to create my beautiful basketball life. G. Smith
April 27, 2019
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
April 27, 2019
Though I knew John only briefly, based on what the men who coached him or played with him at Ohio State have told me about him, I offer what Albert Einstein said when he learned of the death of Gandhi - "It is important to remember his deeds, for in the future, those who were not privileged to know him will doubt such a man ever existed." While that is true for his basketball achievements, it is even more true of his life off the court.
April 27, 2019
Mr. Hustle was "Hondo" . One of the greatest basketball players in the history of the game.
April 27, 2019
My sincere sympathy to the Havlicek Family
John was to me the best Celtic ever. I did
get to meet him when he retired and was
so gracious over the small statue I had made
him. - and I was so impressed that he kept
it on his trophy shelf along with the many
other large'fancy' trophies..- I viewed all
this in the Boston Globe article a month
or so after his retirement when he was
still living in Weston, MA. A few years
later - I met his sweet wife Beth at a
benefit game at Boston College
with several former Celtics.
I mentioned the statue - and she said -you made that for him - he loves that. To me and I know many John was a genuine, humble gentleman. Rest in Peace 'HONDO" Thanks for all the exciting games.

Grew up hearing his name a lot. My Grandparents had a store in Dillonvale , Ohio, just like his Grandparents. The stores were just down the street from each other. Got to meet him there once. They were very proud of him. My Dad and I watched many a game, and always cheered for John. He felt like part of our family since he grew up near the area where my Dad was born.

April 27, 2019
Dear Beth, I met you and John 7 years ago at the Boatman restaurant in Falmouth. I interrupted your lunch but you were so gracious and kind as I explained that as a child I had been told that John and my father were cousins. Whether the stories are true or not, it was such a privilege to meet you both. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
April 27, 2019
you were my childhood hero
April 27, 2019
As a kid raised near Bridgeport he was the first and only real sports hero I ever had. His career and my youth were simultaneousincluding its ending. Maybe thats why one Sunday in April a month before my high school graduation I cried in my familys basement as hes played his last game. His role mode was one that had deep influence on my life. Seldom do you find men like him anymore in any walk of life. He will be sorely missed

Part of the journey is the end...
My idol...
What Jordan did in the air, John did on the parquet.
Learned my work ethic from Hondo
Man am I sad!!!
April 27, 2019
Ol' Hondo is gone, seems way too soon for someone whose heart could hustle endlessly on. You played like a cross-fire hurricane, John, with the canny vision of a sniper. Your body looked like Ichabod Crane, lean and knotted like a youthful sapling though mighty like oak. Your intense face couldn't hide the joy the roundball
gave you; I cannot hide the joy you gave me. Oh,
lost youth, concrete courts, and clutch 3s, they seem like heaven. I hope in your heaven, JH, the
coach, ol' Red, doesn't let you ride the pine long.
April 27, 2019
Despite being a Knicks fan, I was in awe of those great Celtic teams of the 60's &
70's. Especially, the play of Hondo.
Had the pleasure of meeting him twice down here in Jupiter, Fl. while food shopping at Publix. My fond memories of him came back to me in a flash.Even with hair as white as mine. He looked like he could still run anybody into whirl. He a could not have been any nicer.True class.
RIP Hondo, you will be missed.
April 27, 2019
He was the first player I started watching as a kid, and I will admit, I was sad commuting to work yesterday on hearing of his passing.. Hondo Havlicek was the all-around greatest player I ever saw, and likely the classiest that has ever put on a Celtic uniform. Condolences to his Family, and the City of Boston.
April 27, 2019
April 27, 2019
My buddy had a 33 1/3 record of the Celtics' playoff run in 1965 when he made the famous steal to win the game.
Goosebumps forever when we heard that call of the game.
One of Red's favorite players of all time. A gentleman who always made himself available to fans anywhere.
Rest in the peace of knowing that you were a good man. Late into the night, radios all over New England were tuned to his exploits on the court; smiling when Johnny Most would croak out his name in victory.
His family knows that this man was a great man and will be missed eternally.
God speed, Hondo.
April 27, 2019
Another of my heroes of boyhood has left the gym. My gosh...
The original "Sixth Man" for the Celtics and a respected team mate of all those great Celtics championship teams. A true competitive sportsman and honored member of the HOF. Will never be forgotten in the New England area for his gentlemanly approach to celebrity status and a man to be held in honor forever. God bless you, John Havlicek. Rest well and peacefully, sir.
A gentleman and ambassador of the game
April 27, 2019
Great man I met him when I was 16 years old

Dear Beth, You may not remember me, but we (John, you and I) met back in the 60s. I was employed by Gotham Pressed Steel. We made the John Havlicek Basketball Game. I met John at the Kennedy airport in 1964! We were friends and, thanks to him, I was there the night "Havlicek stole the ball". I soon met his future wife Beth and we spent the 2nd week of their honeymoon with them in Bermuda! We lost touch over the years, but I was able to follow him thru the news. He was everything good that has been said about him and they were a wonderful couple. RIP, John!

April 27, 2019
John Havlicek was truly one of the great ones. He and his Buckeye and Celtic teammates will always live in the hearts and memories of true basketball fans, regardless of team affiliation. He was the epitome of teamwork, hustle, humility and sacrifice, and the antithesis of the "Look at me" egos and trash talk of many modern athletes.
Rest in peace, Hondo, and thanks for the memories....
April 27, 2019
I so looked up to Hondo. One of the best players and most complete players I ever had the chance to know. God bless your soul and RIP

John was the closest thing to perpetual motion I ever saw. It is hard to think of him as dying. But now he will shine under perpetual light for eternity. From Columbus, Ohio, I grew up watching Hondo play basketball and he gave us thrill after thrill as Buckeye fans. Later, he made me pay attention to the Celtics too. Beth used to come to my Father's restaurant in Columbus for lunch when she was dating John. God Bless John and Beth and may his soul Rest in Peace! Amen!

May you find comfort and hope in the words of the greatest man who ever lived spoken at the time when a dear friend of his passed away: And when he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice: Lazarus, come on out! 44The [man] that had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his countenance was bound about with a cloth. Jesus said to them: Loose him and let him go.
April 26, 2019
Condolences to Johns family. I am very sad at this news. He was the reason I became a Celtics fan. Played hard, played fair, no ego or showboating, a team player. He is and will be the standard I compare current players to.

Rest in Peace, Hondo.
April 26, 2019
I remember watching him play when I was a kid. He had the most beautiful shot of anybody I ever seen, with the backward spin on the ball. I tried to shoot like he did and became a pretty good shot. Definitely he was one of the best of all times.
April 26, 2019
Mr. Havlicek was one of the nicest members at his club in Florida. I was fortunate to play golf with him on a few occasions and had many conversations before the mens game. I purchased his book Hondo, and had him sign it some years back. He told me he was going to give me the full treatment! Personalized to me, games played, points, championships, HOF year, 13X all star, and dates as a Celtic....UNBELIEVABLE! He was such a kind man, that whether you were a golf partner, staff member, guest, etc... he gave you the full Hondo treatment.
He will be missed.

Rest in peace, John Havlicek.
I offer prayers for you and your family.

Long before you famously 'stole the ball', you stole the heart of anyone who watched you play. The greatest game has lost one of the greatest people to ever step on a basketball court.

Thank you for everything you did for us, Hondo!
April 26, 2019
Miss ya.
April 26, 2019
I was born and raised in Bost area (Melrose). ADORED Celtics growing up. "Hondo" was one of several pure Celtics. All about the team. He was physical "FREAK," IN A GREAT WAY. Had extremely large lung capacity. I think more than once he played all 53 minutes of an OT game. WAS NEVER OUT OF BREATH. A wonderful person.
April 26, 2019
As soon as I heard the name "John Havlicek" this morning I immediately knew it was "Hondo" who I, as a little girl, loved to watch. I could name the starting 5 for a lot of NBA teams back then, those guys had talent and were fun to watch and even grade-school me could tell that Hondo made it happen.
Condolences to his loved ones.
April 26, 2019
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

April 26, 2019
As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.
April 26, 2019
I was a huge Laker fan in the 60s-80s; enthusiastically caught up in the Celtic-Laker rivalry. But it was impossible to have any animosity, even in the context of the great sports rivalry, toward Hondo. He was a true exemplar of class, on and off the court, and the perfect exemplification of the concept of a role model. We were blessed to have the opportunity to watch him play, and grace us with his admirable presence. The news of his passing brought tears to my eyes.

Extending sympathies to Hondo's family, Celtic/Buckeye/basketball family, and his extensive community of friends and fans.

Rest in Peace, John, and thank you.

We are such a blessed people, to live in a society where lifelong dreams can become reality, if we do our part. Like millions of other sports fans, I grew up watching the historic Celtics Lakers rivalry, when you could get exactly what you tuned on for, great basketball by real athletes. Based upon personal tributes already given by those who knew Mr. Havlicek best, it's obvious that he was a friend and servant to others before a guard on a court. That will always speak far
far louder than all the NBA titles in the world.......Matthew 1128-30.
April 26, 2019
I grew up watching him play...Im sure he will be missed...my condolences to the family...
