I never met Marilyn but as I went for a walk today with my boyfriends young daughter we saw the bench in her honor..wanting to teach her about respect for those who serve we saluted her and read her rank and name out lound and thanked her for protecting and her service to our country..I then turned to her and said "Do you think she heard us and is smiling down from heaven?" Being twelve she answered I dont know" just then we took a step back and my fitbit bracelet lit up and vibrated loudly indicating we had taken our 10000 step..she then said "I guess so" I dont believe in coincidence. .I believe in God and heaven and would like to thank Command Sgt. Gabbard on assisting me on teaching a young girl about knowing even when people leave us physically they still live on and remain with us...was very powerful moment..Thank you!

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

I met Marilyn at Fort Bliss during mobilization, and deployed with her to Iraq in December 2006. It was a tough time - leaving family over Christmas to go to a war. Ironically, we flew to Iraq with a bunch of Christmas turkeys in the cargo hold of our aircraft. I'll never forget Marilyn coming up to me with a big smile, to inform me that I was in charge of the "turkeys". Marilyn always had a way to make you smile. Another Marilyn trademark, was that she always worried about everyone else first, always putting her own concerns last. We lost a great American when Marilyn left us. Time will never wash away our fond memories of our fellow soldier and good friend.

My condolences go out to everyone that this man/soldier touched.

I am the daughter of a deceased soldier and I have started a new mission. A large majority of those soldiers giving their lives in Iraq are young. There are few that have families with children. Even fewer are those with older children, especially those over 18 years old.

I am 23 years old, lost my Dad when I was nearly 22. I would really like to reach out to other children of deceased soldiers. Although I wont discriminate based on age (I am willing to talk to anybody about their experience) I am especially interested in those children who are dealing with adult life and the loss of a Father/Mother.

I am very sorry for the loss of your precious Marilyn. I know we're unable to experience another persons pains till we've walked a mile in their shoes, but I do carry multitudes of sympathies in my heart. {I give all praise to God for giving me that}. My belief, is one of Gods main purpose for us, is making our best effort in learning, understanding and embracing what the true meaning of love is, and I think a lot of that comes through reaching out and trying to understand each others trial/tribulations. I think it's in these times we find out our real strengths/weaknesses, our true character, what we are and what we will become.
When I happened upon Sgt. Marilyn she caught my eye. She had a special glow, a look of confidence, honor and integrity. I can see she loved what she did, took pride and had the utmost respect in all her endeavors. SHE WAS A TRUE LEADER, {Not For The Power}, FOR SHE HAD BEEN CALLED AND SHE HEEDED TO THE CALL.
In the today world with little moral/values left, with limited parental and adult role models, WE NEED MORE MARILYN'S. She and others like her are the glue that continue to hold whats left together. SHE AND HER COMRADES SHOULD BE ON THE FOREFRONT OF HEADLINES/HUMAN INTERESTS OF WHAT REAL CONTRIBUTION TO LIFE IS. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AN HONOR TO HAVE SERVED UNDER COMMAND SGT. MARILYN L. There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

This is a fitting day to honor, admire and pay tribute to women soldiers. Mother’s Day is a day that pays tribute to the woman that is always a caretaker, courageous and a protector of her family. As a Mother hen spreads her wings to protect her chicks from death and will sacrifice her life if needed, so has Marilyn spread her golden wings to protect each American Citizen from evil and give back to each one of us another day of Freedom. We are eternally in your debt for your sacrifice. You have established your right of Motherhood and to be in the presences of the Creator of the universe.

We can't imagine what you have been going through since being notified of the death of your Warrior. The Military and families all over the USA and world are grieving with you and praying for you. What a very brave individual you have in your family that would give up a life for their homeland and its people so they can remain free. Your Freedom Fighter has served the Country above and beyond the call of duty, let no one ever tell you different. With the mission now completed your Warrior has been redeployed to Heaven to sit on the right hand of the Supreme Commander and Chief. The Father above has Marilyn in his arms and will give her peace as well as eventually easing your pain and suffering. God speed to you and Command Sgt. Major Marilyn L. Gabbard, our HERO. We are so proud of them that are willing to sacrifice for this great Nation, THANK YOU.

I am so very sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you. My sister and Marilyn were good friends in high school. I know the girls she ran around with in Boone have been greatly affected by Marilyn's passing.
I hope that Marilyn's grandchildren will grow up knowing that their very loving and special Grandma gave her life for our country and that she is a true hero. I am so sorry that they have lost their Grandma.

My family shares your pride and very deep sorrow. Our son, Michael Ewalt is a crew chief on a Blackhawk helicopter with Iowa National Guard, Boone. One of his best friends is Tony Van Cannon. Tony was Best Man at Michael's wedding. Michael is currently serving in Iraq.

There are no words that can fully give comfort. I go back to my faith that He has promised He would never leave us. I as a citizen of these United States want to thank-you for the sacrafice of your loved one. For the sacrafice/sacrafices that you as a family have and will now continue to endure. May the Lord comfort you. Give your hearts ease. Give you peace. That you know that there are so many of us that know that freedom is not free. That "standing on the wall" is a privelege that your wife mother /daughter chose. I am humbled by her service and grateful for her heart. You will be in my prayers. I also have a son in the 1st Airborne division I know the heart of a solider. I see it in the eyes of my grandchildren. The heart of a warrior. A hero just like your wife/mom/daughter/friend. To the Family of Command Sgt. Marilyn L. Gabbard:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To her family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss her, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by her presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
