Lynn Chandnois Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 21, 2011.
FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Lynn Chandnois, a 1950s special teams star for the Pittsburgh Steelers whose average on kickoff returns ranks second only to Gale Sayers in NFL history, died Tuesday. He was 86.

Michigan State, where Chandnois was a two-way standout in the late 1940s, said Thursday that Chandnois died in Flint, Mich., where he lived. Other details were not disclosed.

Chandnois played seven seasons for the Steelers after they drafted him No. 8 overall in 1950. He averaged 29.6 yards on kickoff returns, behind only the 30.6 averaged by Sayers. Chandnois made the NFL's all-star game twice and had a league-high 1,593 all-purpose yards in 1953.

"Lynn was one of our great players from the past," Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said in a statement. "He was a really good person and a better player than anyone ever gave him credit for being. He is one of those special players that we will always remember."

Chandnois was in the Naval Air Corps f or two years before he enrolled at Michigan State in 1946 at the age of 21. He had 20 career interceptions for 410 yards, both still school records. A halfback, he ranks second in Spartans history with 6.55 yards per carry and sixth with 31 touchdowns.

"During his era, Lynn Chandnois was one of college football's most talented two-way players," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. "He was so valuable on both sides of the football that he earned the nickname '60-minute Chandnois.' You get an idea of what kind of an impact Lynn had on the field when you look in MSU's record book today and still see his name listed so prominently.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chandnois family in this time of grief."

Survivors include his wife and two daughters. Funeral arrangements were not announced.

Decided today to look online to read about my friend and fellow employee at Jessop Steel.Saddened to read Lynn passed away about five years ago.My father and I worked with Lynn during the 1960's in the Jessop Warren Michigan warehouse.Being twenty years older than me he was an inspirational figure in my life. I will never forget and have told many friends how Lynn would place a small wager with someone who didn't know his strength betting that he could rip a yellow pages phone book in half.I never saw him lose a bet.R.I.P. my friend.Max Trembour

My Dad was a rookie during Lynn's last season with the Steelers. I just told my father, Art, this news -- and he was deeply saddened about Lynn's passing. Dad just went on and on about how nice Lynn was to him and said he had the best looking "camel hair, cashmere full-length coat" you ever saw -- to go along with his movie star good looks! God Bless the Chadnois family.

I first met Lynn when I was a new Buyer at Chevrolet Mfg. and he was with Jessop Steel. What a pleasure and an honor to have known him. His humor and friendship at Chevrolet and Regional Purchasing was special for all of us who were associated with him. We will miss you "Chad".

To the entire Chandnois family:

I first heard Mr. Chandnois name from my high school Principal Peter Fusi. He told us what a great athlete Lynn was. Although they were fierce competitors (Fusi Northern Chandnois Central) they were able to join forces in East Lansing. Coach Fusi always spoke with such reverence about his old friend and teammate. Later in life I tried to arrange an interview with this colossal Michigan athlete. When I made contact with Lynn, he was not very receptive and seemed a bit disinterested. Who could blame him? I was a young broadcaster and Mr. Chandnois was a busy business executive by this time. I didn’t give up. I knew of this mans many accomplishments, both in sport and life. I wanted my radio audience to hear his story. So I did they only thing I could do, called in Fusi to run interference. Lynn Chandnois appeared on my show the next day.

Please know that my thoughts are with you during this most difficult time.

Our family grew up in Pittsburgh and loved the Steelers. Lynn and his family lived up the street from us during those playing days. We all looked up to Lynn - he was tall, handsome, a great running back & returner for the Steelers....and he was a nice man. He was always taking the time to say "hello" and talk about the games, which was impressive for 7 to 10 year olds. Later in my career, I got to know Lynn calling on GM in Flint. He was exactly the same...always had time. Our deepest sympathy to the family. He was definitely "one of the good guys"!

I am a die-hard STEELER fan now living in Columbus, OH.
Several years ago a friend's Mom died and upon cleaning her mother's house, my friend came across a bubble gum football card wrapped in plastic and in almost mint condition. Knowing how big a STEELER fan I am, she gave me the card. It was a Lynn Chandois card.
This remains one of my most prized pieces of all my STEELER memoribilia.
My heartfelt condolences to the entire Chandois family.

I had the pleasure of working with Lynn during his many years with Jessop Steel Co. Unless you checked his impressive stats, from ALL AMERICAN at State through the Steeler years, you would never know what a superb athlete Lynn was. Totally unassuming, he was a gentleman -- truly a "class act".

May choirs of angels sing thee to thy rest, my friend.

Linda I know you don't know me, but I have known Lynn since 1966 when I went to work for Jarvie Insurance and he would come in to see Jack. What a wonderful, sweet person he was to a 17 year old girl fresh off the farm. He was always kind and considerate. He always brought back things from the Steelers reunions for my son, Jason.
Jason still has the football card that Lynn gave him. Please know that you are in my prayers. Vickie Robertson (Davison, MI
