Leota Cassels, former resident of Guymon, died peacefully on the afternoon of Thursday, December 28, 2017 in Amarillo.
Born Leota Jane Jay on Independence Day in 1935, she grew up in a modest farming family of four in the Elk City area during the throes of the Great Depression. She attended school and graduated from Merritt High School in 1955.
Shortly after leaving home to pursue a life of her own in Amarillo, Leota caught the eye of a strapping fellow-church-goer, Jimmy Ray Cassels, whom she married in 1959. Shortly thereafter in 1963, they began their family with the birth of their daughter, Jeanine. Fortune would lead them to Dodge City and Goodland, Kansas, where they adopted a newborn son, Brian in 1970. Eventually, they would relocate to McCook, Nebraska then nearby Indianola, and eventually to Guymon, where they settled and lived for nearly thirty years. Citingthe desire to be nearer to her dear and only sister, Doris, as well as close family friends and in-laws, she and Jim would eventually make their way to Amarillo.
Leota enjoyed attending church services and activities, spending time with close friends and family, and was a ferociously competitive card player. She loved being a mother and eventually, a grandmother. She was preceded in death by her beloved sister, Doris just two weeks before her own passing, and by her daughter, Jeanine in 1983, beside whom she will eventually be interred at Elmhurst Cemetery in Guymon. She is survived by her loving husband, Jim, her son Brian and his wife, Jane, and her grandsons Kian and Guthrie.
Friends and loved-ones are invited to honor and celebrate her at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10 at her church home, Bell Avenue Baptist Church, located at 5211 Bell Street, in Amarillo, Texas 79109. A luncheon will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers and gifts, Leota's family humbly requests that modest contributions be made to her memorial fund on YouCaring.com, or in care of the Bell Avenue Baptist Church of Amarillo.
