Paul Hoak Obituary

HOAK, Paul Myron 101, of Springfield, passed away Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 12:02 AM in Glen Forest. He was born in Springfield on June 6, 1917, to the late Ira and Olive (Grisso) Hoak. Mr. Hoak, a Springfield High School graduate studied piano pedagogy at Washington University, St. Louis, MO. During World War II he served in the US Army as a Medical Technician from 1943 to 1945. After returning from Europe, he attended Wittenberg University from 1946 to 1950 while continuing to work part-time at Crowell-Collier. He graduated from Wittenberg University with a B.S. in Music in 1950. After graduating he became a music teacher in Clinton County. Mr. Hoak was employed by Crowell-Collier as a young man in 1936 and worked there for a period of 20 years, sometimes part-time. He later was also an employee at Mitchell Engineering as a clerk. In 1957, after passing the U.S. Civil Service exam, he became a Springfield letter carrier. He was employed at the Post Office until he retired in 1977. Nearly all his life, "Myron" was a member of the Hillside Church of God, where he was active in the music ministry as a pianist, organist, vocalist, composer, member of the bell choir, and a member of the vocal choir. He wrote over 35 original compositions expressing his devout faith in God. During his later years, he was still serving as an organist in both the Hillside and Northside Churches of God. Paul was married to Mary Ernestine King on June 11, 1938, in the Hillside Church. They shared 62 and one-half years together before her death on February 24, 2001. From 1980-1990 the Hoaks toured Canada and the United States, including Hawaii. Also preceding him in death were his brothers and sisters, Daniel W. Hoak, Lawrence G. Hoak, Eugene Q. Hoak, Velma Yoder Minnich, and Esther Miriam Butler Ours. He grieved the loss of his younger daughter, Wanda Carol (Fred) James of Indianapolis, IN on December 3, 2009. He is survived by his older daughter, Myra Pauline Hoak of Springfield, his son-in-law Fred L. James of Indianapolis, IN, 3 grandchildren Teresa L. (Mark P) Mattimore of Cincinnati, OH. Paul M. Hoak loved the Lord, his wife and family and everyone who entered his life of 101 years, He was a kind and gentle soul who served the Lord here on earth until his last breath. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 11, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 PM at Jackson Lytle and Lewis Life Celebration Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Wednesday in the Hillside Church of God with Rev Larry Cook, Rev. Mike Criner, and Rev. Terry McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
