I had known Ben since has was about six. Even as a boy he transcended the sometimes cruel tribalism of childhood in favor of good cheer, wry wit, and plain decency. While I didn't see him much when we were adults, from our few encounters and what I came to know of him, he carried these fine qualities into his life as a man. The last time I saw Ben was a chance meeting at the grocery store in Stonington on Christmas Eve in 2015; before then, it had been years. He was with his daughter and son. Their warmth, gregariousness, and humor reflected his own, so I knew he had done well. That twenty minutes planted itself, and over the ensuing couple of years we exchanged emails and vowed to get together. I looked forward to seeing more of him, and lament that now it can't happen. That's my loss, and I know his passing must be a terrible blow to his loved ones. Ben struck me as an increasingly rare exemplar of unpretentious genuineness and rectitude. I commend, as evidence, the wonderfully heartfelt piece he published in the Hartford Courant just two summers ago:

So long, Ben.

Best,

I have nothing but fond memories of Ben (the Big Feeder) Davol. Particularly on the soccer field at Drew. My heartfelt condolences to his family.
