1939 - 2017 William "Bill" P. Rice, Jr., 78, of River Rd., died at Davis Place in Danielson, CT on December 26, 2017. Born in Putnam, Connecticut, he was the son of the late William P. Rice, Sr. and Doris (Pepin) Rice. He was the loving husband of Janice Parent Rice for 15 years. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rose (Alvord) Rice who passed away in 1999. Bill served in the US Army and was later employed by Wajer Express as a truck driver. He was a member of the Putnam Lions Club and Teamsters Local 170. He enjoyed reading and going to local casinos. He was described as a good spirited and positive guy. Bill is survived by his sons, William F. Rice and his wife Polly of Simsbury, CT, Robert J. Rice, Sr. and his wife Elisa of Hamden, CT, Brian J. Rice and his wife Amanda of Woodstock, CT; his step-son, James Parent and his wife Sabrina of Middletown, CT; his step-daughter, Nicole Burgess and her husband Bernie of Killingly, CT; his brother, Joseph Rice of Putnam, CT; his sister, Lea Therrien of Putnam, CT; and his 10 grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial for William at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2017 in Saint Mary Church of the Visitation. Burial will follow in St Mary Cemetery in Putnam, CT. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northeastern Connecticut, P.O. Box 632, Putnam, CT. I didn't have the privilege of knowing Mr. Rice or his family, however, I was taken by his photo when looking through the obituaries. He had an amazing smile ... despite the fact that he was clearly dealing with health issues at the time of the photo (oxygen tubes). His warmth and kindness came through ... even to a stranger.
My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

As a wonderful bus driver for Putnam, Bill was a great "uncertified teacher" who was respected by us and our children. We thank God for his caring spirit.
