Evert Joe Dykhuis, of Holland, died December 14, 2017 at the age of 69.
Evert was born on March 15, 1948 to Derk and Johanna Dykhuis in Groningen in the Netherlands. He came to the United States with his family in 1958 and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1966. After marrying Susan in 1977, they adopted two children, Joshua and Angela.
Evert worked in the millwork industry and was a keen salesman. In his spare time, he enjoyed singing, playing with his grandchildren, and spoiling his wife. He was a loyal servant of the Lord and loved to speak of his faith with others. While he continued to battle multiple medical problems until the end of his life, he will be remembered for his courage and tenacity as he used his experiences to help others going through similar trials. Evert regularly went out of his way to encourage, support, and assist anyone he met who needed help and will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Pieter, Helen, and Alys; and granddaughter, Ariana. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan; children, Joshua Dykhuis and Angela (Ryan) Reynolds; and grandchildren, Donovan, Josie, Tanner, Benjamin, and Madeleine.
An open house celebrating Evert's life is planned for Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 5-7 p.m. at Christ Memorial Church in Holland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Hospice of Holland, and Ele's Place.

My thoughts and prayers with you and your family. I'm Spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this Year
I see the countless Christmas trees,
Around the world below.
With tiny lights, like heaven's stars,
Reflecting on the snow.
The sight is so spectacular,
Please wipe away that tear.
For I'm spending Christmas,
With Jesus Christ this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs,
That people hold so dear.
But the sounds of music can't compare,
With the Christmas choir up here.
For I have no words to tell you,
The joy their voices bring.
For it is beyond description,
To hear the angels sing.
I can't tell you of the splendor,
Or the peace here in this place.
Can you just imagine Christmas,
With our Savior, face to face?
I'll ask Him to light your spirit,
As I tell Him of your love.
So then pray one for another,
As I lift you eyes above.
Please let your hearts be joyful,
And let your spirit sing.
For I'm Spending Christmas in Heaven,
And I'm walking with the King.

Evert, we've thought about you many times over the years. You taught and graciously helped out both Chris and I. Shared many laughs, prayer times and gave me my first chance to be "on camera"! Who would have thought I'd know that much about windows and doors! I remember serving with him on the Board at First Congregational Church in Saugatuck. Our sympathies to Sue and your family. May current sadness be replaced with smiles of memories. He was truly one-of-a-kind!
