Eric Comstock Obituary

Eric G. Comstock
1927-2016
Eric G. Comstock, M.D. passed away peacefully in the evening of Sept. 28, 2016 at his home in Houston, Texas. He was attended by his family and friends.
Born on February 25, 1927 to Eric Charles Comstock and Gladys Darnell Comstock in San Diego, California, he survived his three older siblings, Louise Rutherford, Paul Comstock, and Gladys Colston. He is survived by five children and six grandchildren of his marriage to Betsy Jo Smith Comstock: Kimberly Comstock (daughter, Hannah Karin), Carolyn Comstock Keelaghan (sons, Paul Joseph and Aidan Patrick and daughters, Aubrey Claire and Bridget Elizabeth), Clarinda Comstock, Eric Steven Comstock (son, Eric Anthony) and Charles Kevin Comstock.
After attending the University of California, Berkley and service in the Navy, Dr. Comstock moved to Houston in the 1950's to attend medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, where he met and married Betsy Jo Smith. He went on to become a pioneer in the field of Clinical Toxicology. He was instrumental in founding the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, the Institute of Clinical Toxicology in Houston, as well as the establishment of the first poison control centers. He later became interested in the science of addiction and was a pioneer in the field of addiction treatment.
Later in his career he worked as an expert witness, providing testimony in court cases in which toxicology played a role, such as asbestos, silicosis and dram shop litigation. He was well known for the unusually high quality of his testimony. After one such case, Dr. Comstock's accomplishments were acknowledged by a federal district judge who, in rendering a verdict, stated in his opinion that Dr. Comstock "had given the most credible and best expert witness testimony he had ever heard for all the years he had served on the bench."
A memorial service will be held on October 22, 2016 at 11:30 AM, at the Houston Hospice Chapel, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Houston Hospice.

Just encountered Dr. Comstock's obituary, Not mentioned was his important contribution to stopping an attempt to sink a deep injection well to be sited in the middle of a Houston water well field to dispose of arsenic. Bad Idea. Best expert witness I ever had. RIP Doc. Well done good and faithful servant.

Oh no!! I am so so sorry about your loss. This morning I was talking about Dr. Stock with a coworker and googled his name to find this terrible news :( Dr. Comstock was such a wonderful man! He helped my kids and I with a Workman's Compensation trial regarding my husband's death. We are so grateful to him! This are very sad news. May he rest in peace. Ana Ramirez

Very sorry to just hear about this, always liked this man. I'll always remember his calm demeanor when he took me fishing and sailing as a kid and as bad as we behaved, he never lost his temper. Through the years I got to see him many years in a row, spent countless hours riding motorcycles with him, still remember he used to write "poison" on the "real" butter so everyone would eat the fake butter and leave the real for him lol he was a character and even after he divorced my Aunt, I still thought he was part of the family. RIP Uncle Eric
