Dr. Terry Blasdel Obituary
Houston resident Dr. Terry Blasdel, DVM, born and raised in Canyon, Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Feb. 17, 2021, after a long co-existence with cancer. She had been in hospice care at home watched over by husband, family and friends.
Terry earned a B.A. in biology from Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana, a Master of Agriculture degree from West Texas State University in Canyon, and a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine from Texas A & M University, College Station. She started her professional career as a veterinarian at the Houston Zoological Gardens where she headed the zoo's research program. This job resulted in many memorable experiences, including an unexpected encounter with a full-grown male rhinoceros, which did not end very well for Terry, but made for a great story that she delighted in telling throughout the years.
In 1986, she began working at UT Medical School in Houston, and in 2005 moved to the University of Houston as the Director, Animal Care Operations. Throughout the years she also worked part-time at NASA, training the Space Station crew in how to conduct experiments on mice. In her later years, Terry directed her efforts toward supporting lab animal sanctuaries.
There will be much that Terry will be remembered for—her selfless giving of time, expertise and advice to her colleagues and friends, her deep love for her husband and family, the long hours of mentoring younger students and the passion she maintained for lab animal welfare.
She is survived by husband Chris Coleman and siblings Gene, Mike and Chris. Due to the pandemic, her memorial services will be postponed until further notice.

Terry I miss you so much. Our family won't be the same with you not at family get togethers.
You made Chris so happy. I know it was a bit overwhelming on your first family thing. After all there were so many of us. I will love you forever.

Terry mentored me as a 4th year vet student, helping to shape my path in research animal medicine. Deeply caring, imminently practical, and always with a sense of humor, she will be truly missed.

Terry was a delightful person who was as interested in people as she was in animals. She had warmth, charm, and an abundance of intelligence coupled with an unlimited capacity for caring for all creatures. I will never forget her and am so sorry to hear of her passing. May her family find some measure of peace and may her memory be a blessing always.

Terry and I were roommates in Vet School. She was so optimistic and energetic. She had a pet skunk that would sneak into my room at night. I am sorry for your loss and remember her fondly.

The laboratory animal science community has lost one of our brightest stars. And many of us have lost a dear friend. Terry was one of the first people to make me feel welcome when I came to the TMC in 1989. Terry’s love for our animals and our people will live on in those of us who love her.

Heartfelt sympathy to Terry's family, colleagues and friends. This is a huge loss for all who knew and loved her. Terry was not only someone both Chris and I worked with during her tenure at the zoo, she was a dear friend of ours throughout those years and all the years since. She prepared a special toast to us when we got married and came immediately to the ER when Chris had his heart attack. And Chris photographed her wedding in Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Your outstanding contributions and accomplishments to such a noble profession are your legacy, Terry. Marks you’ve left can’t be erased. Godspeed.
