Dear Family of Father Dan,
Father's funeral yesterday was a wonderful tribute to him; thanks to all of you who helped with the planning, gathering of photos, food, and all.
I met Father Dan ten years ago when a priest from Tanzania, Fr. Salutaris Mpinge, stayed at our home. He said that he had a good friend in Wisconsin, and so we invited Father Dan for a visit to our home in La Crosse. As we got to know him, we learned of his connection to Tanzania and his Encounter Tanzania program. Then in 2008, my husband Dave and I had the pleasure of joining Father Dan in a trip to Tanzania. This was his final trip to Tanzania, as he became quite ill, with what we thought was malaria at the time. Father Dan tried to put on a brave face, but we knew that he was not well, and after returning to the USA, we learned about his cancer.
We have many happy memories of him, including his talk at our parish, Blessed Sacrament, in La Crosse. He spoke at an evening event at our parish, to educate people about Tanzania. My husband is now a deacon at Blessed Sacrament and we have a sister parish, St. Andrew's Cathedral Parish, in Ifakara, Tanzania. Fr. Dan also gave Dave some excellent tips for his homilies.
Last winter we saw Father Dan again and he was able to meet our two young grandchildren when we went out to eat in Milwaukee. I will miss him, but look forward to meeting again in heaven.
I have some saved digital photos from our trip to Tanzania in 2008. If anyone would like to see them, I will share the website with you. Send me an email at [email protected] .
You are in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Marie Allen
