"Coach Lassila, squad leader Kraus reporting. I apologize for being late sir. A minus one for tardiness? Yes sir. And 20 push-ups for being late? Yes sir. Did I bring chips? Yes sir. Only 5 push-ups now? Ok sir.

Coach Lass was a true classic. Need more like him.

Darrell was one of my mentors when I first came to North in 1978 as a teacher. Without question he had a style that was his own. I witnessed him really getting after a behavior problem, and making that "tough guy" shrink down a notch or two, getting the apology desired, and believe me, the problem did not reoccur. He would scare the wits out of me and I would be sitting working on my grade book in the other corner of the gym office. The student would leave, and Darrell would instantly smile. Another problem solved! I can't tell you how many of our ex-players will never forget Mr Lassila in roll call looking at a senior covering his number on the floor, looking him in the eye and telling him, "nice job Mr ... you've got that grade up to a solid "D".

This man is remembered fondly to this day. May he rest in peace! You have left quite a legacy at North High
