Gene befriended me most recently upon my move to McCall after the passing of my sweet husband of 40 years. Gene and 16 good male friends had spent a weekend (week) for 25+ years in June at our cabin on the North Fork of the Boise River. They revered that time together and annually left us a poem or writing about their escapades each year. Gene had a way with words and often wrote the memorials.
In McCall, Gene reached out to me at a time when I was particularly low. We met for coffee at his suggestion, and I will never forget how gently he reached across the table and placed his hands on mine, looked into my eyes and asked with great goodness, "Are you doing alright?" I was not and because he sensed that, he had reached out to help.
What a gentle, kind, smart, funny, gifted person Gene was. I feel fortunate to have gotten to know him these last few years. He reminded in many ways of my Chris. That is the highest compliment I can give as to the character and the quality of the gentle-man. Gene really did give so much to all he met, and I will always remember and be grateful for his tenderness and compassion. My best to Gene's oh-so-loved wife and to his children. They are blessed to have had him in their lives.

I loved Gene and his mom and dad, AND all his sisters and brothers, as well! I met them in 1960 and shared many holidays with them. I actually spent December 18, 2015 with Gene laughing about old times and enjoying every minute of it! Though my husband Rich and I didn't see him often in the last 30 years, I found reading the obituary to be spot on of the man we knew and loved. Gene and Rich did a lot of surfing together in the early 1970s after their Vietnam tours and had a great appreciation of each other leaving even more wonderful memories... The World won't be the same without Gene in it.

I was lucky enough to be his friend, to enjoy the warmth of that friendship, to laugh with him, play with him and to hear and be part of his stories. My life is paler because he is gone. Gene will be missed - a lot.

I WORKED WITH GENE AT THE POST OFFICE IN THE MID 1970's. HE WAS ALWAYS ENTHUSIASTIC AND ENERGETIC. WHAT I REMEMBER HIM SAYING MOST WAS 'YOU'LL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE' A PERFECT EPITAPH, DON'T YOU THINK?
