Jim was the one who got me involved in prison ministry. He invited me to go out to the prison my first time. He was holding services there and said Davie, come go with us. What a crew..... His daughter, Lester Metzger, and Orian Collingsworth. His Wife, Mrs. Ford, Lester's niece Clovia and two daughters Wanda an Leila, from time to time and now me. Ill never forget that first night there. We went through those two large iron gates and the sound of them closing .
Jim was all friendly until we got there and then he turned to me and said Davie, I'm not going to spend much time talking to you while here ...We are here for these men. By the way , your preaching ....

I had no notes... had not prepared... Wow... now what ... Well I opened my Bible and read some verses from Romans and found myself empowered by the Spirit for one of the first times in my life. I had no idea what I had said when I was done ... but for the next couple of years i preached almost every night there .... We all did ... The girls led singing and sang special music and we worshiped God with 15 to 20 guys. Jim and Lester, Orian were the back bones of our group and taught me how to do prison and street ministry ...We also preached at the Gospel Mission down town Boise, during that time too.

After Prison time , Jim would take us all home to his house for Dinner ... The Dinner table we huge and I never went there that there were not 10-15 people there with me . I never knew his Wife Marie to complain... as Jim brought people home for a meal.... always lots of good home cooking ....Several folks lived with Jim and Marie that they had taken in off the street. The Chandlers lived their faith on a daily basis.

Jim was not a spit and polish preacher ... He was my mom and dad's pastor for some time..... Mom called Jim a diamond in the rough. His sermons were always simple and to the point . He called a spade a spade and spoke what lay on his big heart. He preached my mothers funeral. I know she loved it.

My wife Deanna, is the only person i ever knew who ever said no to Jim. When he wanted some one to do something .. He simply directed them to do it and most folks did what he wanted . She'd say no and He would smile and walk away ...

I can honestly say Jim and Lester were two of the most influential people in all of my life .

I had not seen Jim for several years... kind of lost track of Him ... At District Conference this evening I heard of His passing and i guess His services were today. .. Wow .. Just a lil Sad.. I'm sorry i lost track of you my friend. .... . I do love you so. Sad we didn't get a chance to say .... well i guess, good by.... but more just to have one last conversation ... I'm pretty sure we will have it one day ..... looking forward to that .....

Life does move along ... Thank you Jesus for giving me so many good people down through the years ... there really have been so many...love you so much Jim...

I lived across the street from Jim when he was on 5th St. I worked at Alsips and lived in one of their apartments. I spent many an evening sitting on his front porch listening to his stories and sermons. I had lots of respect for Jim.
