God rest this honorable mans soul. Even in my advanced years, I recall my time on USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10), in the Supply Department, S-1 division. For it was there I met and befriended Sonny. In fact, it was Sonny who relieved me of my duties of outside storekeeper in Vietnam. I recall a gentle, kind honorable man. I left Tripoli on a helecopter off the coast of Vietnam in 1967. Many years passed until one day I received a call, out-of-the-blue, from Sonny. He tracked me down via the internet. Boy, did we have some yarns to spend. Sonny described his life, post Tripoli. He seemed to especially be proud of his woodworking hobby and his beloved CJ. I was introduced to CJ over the phone, and we had fun conversations. I always liked it when Sonny called and ribbed each other over our favorite football teams, Boise and THE Crimson Tide of Alabama. When Sonny could no longer hear well enough to call, we emailed some, but I loved seeing him with his Brothers at the VA, where he seemed to relish. Sonny is now gone and joined his crew mates in Glory. May smooth seas and following winds be with you Sonny. Someday we will reunite, and once again resurrect our friendship and become shipmates once again in a place where there are no storms or foul weather. We will bask in splendid sunshine where there is no war and no ill will. Farewell shipmate, friend and brother. "Hand salute" Tom Ballard
