Val James Shields
1946 - 2016
Val James Shields, 69, our dear husband, father and grandpa passed away peacefully on July 15, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Val was born July 19, 1946 in Tooele, Utah to Maxine Walters Shields and Glen "Sandy" Shields. His family moved from Tooele and settled in Pleasant Grove where he went to school and graduated from Pleasant Grove High, class of 1964. It was there that he met the love of his life, Sallie Beers. Val and Sallie were sealed for time and all eternity in the Manti, Utah Temple on July 19, 1968. They were blessed with four wonderful children; Rakelle, Burke, Natalie, and Shaylyn. Val completed 2 years at BYU and later went back and earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 2000 from the University of Phoenix.
Dad especially loved spending time with his family and made it a priority to make fun family memories. Some of his favorite things include photography, listening to music, singing (he had a beautiful voice), he was an avid reader, loved to play golf, hunt and ride motorcycles with his son. Dad was an advocate of the scouting program and received the rank of Eagle at the age of 14 alongside his father.
Val worked for Chrysler Financial for 40 years and continued in the Auto-Finance Industry until he retired in March of this year. His work took him to many places, including moving his family to Boise, and has made many life-long friends over the years.
Dad was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was dedicated to the Lord and diligently served in many capacities throughout his life. Dad had a powerful way of delivering a message and bearing testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
In his later years, Dad enjoyed taking trips with his dear wife in the mountains of Idaho, making wonderful memories with his children and grandchildren there. They both loved being in the outdoors, fishing, hiking, enjoying nature and meeting new friends along the way.
Dad fought a courageous battle against lung cancer for nearly 2 years. He is our hero and we are blessed with the time we had with him here on this earth and are grateful for the knowledge that families can be together forever.
Val is survived by his eternal companion, Sallie; his children, Rakelle (Steve) Hansen, Burke Shields, Natalie (Ryan) Christensen, Shaylyn (Beau) Buchanan; and 12 grandchildren; his brother, Jay (Barbara) Shields; and sisters, Janice (Jan) Nelson and Shauna Jo (Bob) Wenger.

Val was a great boss, a great man, and to echo many others here, a great mentor. Never has anyone taught me so much with such conservation of language. I can still hear his chuckle, and his "Oh my heck," and he is missed.
