Janette "Jan" Peterson
1952-2017
Janette Elaine Peterson (Jan), 65, of Boise, passed away in the early hours of February 25th, 2017 surrounded by loved ones in her home while battling ALS.
Jan was born January 7th, 1952 in Quantico Virginia to the proud parents of James and Marian Peterson. Jan dedicated her heart and soul to her family, friends, colleagues, and a multitude of people in her community. Her love of taking care of others led her to a career in emergency services. She has touched this community in a way that can only be considered genuine and vast. Her love of the outdoors inspired her to volunteer with Idaho Mountain Rescue at a young age.
Her passion for taking care of people sent her on a circuitous adventure that landed her in a field working in emergency rooms, responding in ambulances, responding to calls on emergency hotlines, and instructing EMT courses to people in the EMS and firefighting communities.. Eventually her love of all things not found within walls lead her back to the great outdoors and wildland firefighting.
After experiencing that playground, opportunity knocked at the door of her career and she accepted a job in Safety and Health for the Bureau of Land Management. In that time she influenced the processes that impacted the wellbeing of everyone in the agency. Her influence benefited the people…not the process.
She is survived by her son Eric Walker, her daughter Darbi Sullivan, and her son-in-law Tracy Mickelsen. She is survived by her grandchildren Ty, Bryce, Lexi, and Layla. Services will be held at Cloverdale Funeral Home on March 4th, 2017 at 10:00 am followed by her burial at Dry Creek Cemetery. A celebration of her life will occur after burial at Cloverdale Funeral Home's Reception Center.
From that day forward our family will celebrate our mother's life daily…we aren't sure where…but you are welcome to join us somewhere in the great outdoors.

It's hard to believe 2 years have passed. Jan left everything wonderful and Eric and Michelle have it. I'm sure she was smiling down on their wedding last weekend. Sometimes peace and happiness are right in front of us. Thanks Jan for helping them find it.

I was saddened to learn of Jan's death. She was always so fun and full of life that it's hard to imagine that she's passed away. My condolences and sincere sympathy to her kids and grandchildren. Jan was a valuable asset to the Bureau's Safety and Health Management Team (SHMT). But because of her dedication to and work on the SHMT, her legacy of ensuring a safe workplace for BLM employees and the visiting public will continue even though she's gone. So long, my dear, dear friend. I will see you in the next world.

My prayers and condolences go out to Jan's family and friends. I knew Jan as a fellow safety and health professional. Jan and I shared some thoughts and ideas on how to keep the employees safe in their work environments. She was a kind and professional woman. I feel blessed to have known her. May God bless.

To Jan & family,
You were such a nice person, never got to meet you in person but enjoyed our conversation on face book. I will share this memo from you to my friend/classmate/wrestling teammate LCpl Edward J. Rykoskey: "Ed, I hope they find you and today you went missing. Save a spot on the bench in Heaven and I will see you soon. I have been diagnosed with ALS in May, so in 2 years I will come looking for you." Ed was MIA in Vietnam August 18, 1966. RIP Jan, you are a beautiful person. God bless to your family.

Dearest Eric, Darbi and family,
Your Mom absolutely meant the world to me, and the countless friends she touched along her journey of life. There are no words that I can express how dearly loved and missed she will be.
The many memories we all have of your Mom, your Gramma & Grampa, and all those who have gone before us are now a part of our soul. It's comforting to know that wherever our path takes us, we will always have them with us.
I love you two more than you'll ever know.

I was so sad to hear of Jan's battle with ALS. I know personally the pain this horrible disease brings to families. I had the pleasure of working in the safety arena with Jan for many years as she led our Federal Safety Council. She always prepared interesting speakers and topics to further promote safety and health for all of us. She always had a smile for everyone and will be missed immensely.

A long time ago.
High on a timbered ridge.
Out of the smoke trudged this woman and her two helpers.
Bringing bandages and potions to treat my crew.
And cookies!
A lady. An angel.

Jan was instrumental in the development of the Great Basin's Critical Incident Stress Management Program in the early 2000's. Her footprint is part of the National Interagency Critical Incident Stress Management Program. She leave a legacy and made many things possible in taking care of our firefighters.

My sincere condolences to all of Jan's family, friends, and colleagues. I met Jan as a coworker at the BLM but she quickly became a dear friend. Jan was so sharp and so great at what she did, she also had a great sense of humor and was just a ton of fun. It was fun to hear so many stories about Eric and Darbi while I was working with Jan and then to have the chance to meet both of you as adults - you, along with Jan's grandkids, were unquestionably the light of her life. I always loved getting a chance to catch up with "Grannie Jannie" at Ty's basketball games. Jan left us way too soon and she will be missed so much. Peace and love to all of you -
