Eilene Scott Evans
1914-2015
In the fullness of time, Eilene Scott Evans, 101, of Cascade, Idaho died on December 26th in Boise at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, where she had been residing for the past year.
Eilene was born on July 20, 1914, on a family homestead near McCall, Idaho to G.K. and Elizabeth Coski Scott. She taught for 29 years in many different Idaho schools, including Roseberry, MacGregor, Norwood, Ketchum, Yellow Pine, Emmett, and Cascade. Her only out-of-state experience was teaching at Indian Springs AFB where she witnessed the explosion of 14 atomic bombs at the Nevada testing range. Early in her career she favored rural one- and two-room schools but taught the longest in Cascade. She earned her teacher's Life Certificate from Lewiston State Normal School and, many years later, her baccalaureate from Idaho State University.
Mark Twain said, "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness" and Eilene exemplified that from her travels to Australia, New Zealand, Central and South America and around the U.S. A life-long learner right to the very end, she toted her Kindle even to medical appointments.
The fraternity of her profession and the neighbors and friends of the community of Cascade enriched her life and made it possible for her to stay in her home past her 100th birthday. She served on the board of the Cascade Public Library, was deputy commissioner for Idaho of the Clan Scott Society, a member of the Cascade American Legion Auxiliary, the DAV Auxiliary, Idaho Genealogical Society, Valley County Genealogical Society, and a past member of AAUW.
Fondly called Grandma Beans by some, she is survived by her sons, Robert K "Scotte" Scott of Cascade, and David and Sally Blackwell, her step-children, Jean Hall and Jerry and Phyllis Evans, all of Boise, and many, many grands and great-grands. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Ivan Evans, in 1988 and her sister, Helen-Kay Kreizenbeck in 2009.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 2 at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church in Cascade.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Long Valley Preservation Society, PO Box 444, Donnelly, Idaho 83615 or the Cascade Library, 83611. Condolences may be left at www.bowmanfuneral.com
