Dina Wakulchik Obituary

Dina Roberts Wakulchik

54, of Indianapolis, passed away on Wednesday, May 18, 2016. Following her 2015 lung cancer diagnosis, she fought relentlessly against the disease with more strength and optimism than anyone could have asked of her. She was surrounded by loved ones in her final days and will be carried forever within their hearts.

Dina was born in October of 1961 in Indianapolis, IN, the first child of Verna Elizabeth and David Wilson Roberts. She grew up in Logansport and Marion, IN, lived briefly in the Netherlands, where her daughter, Natasha, was born, and spent the majority of her life in the Indianapolis area. Dina met Mark Wakulchik, whom she soon nicknamed "Mr. Wonderful", in 2005, which was the start of their many adventures together. The couple were married in February of 2008 and enjoyed innumerable concerts, comedy shows, and camping trips together.

She was thoroughly devoted to improving the lives of the overlooked and the devitalized, committing her mental and physical energy to advocating for what she believed was right. She volunteered for many organizations including Indianapolis Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Freedom Indiana, the Canary Café, and the USS Indianapolis Survivors Organization.

An astute political commentator, she was passionate about the importance of being well-informed and engaged in politics. Though she was a (self-described) diehard Democrat, she was also a champion for voter awareness, irrespective of party lines. She worked at polling sites in over thirty elections, serving as an inspector, a clerk, a judge, and Democratic precinct committeeperson, and participated in numerous voter registration drives and political campaigns.

Dina was a fantastic impromptu cook, whipping up meals from whatever she had on hand, often inspired by her favorite restaurants. She was a grammarian through-and-through, lending her services to friends and relatives in need, in addition to her many years as a successful legal secretary. She enjoyed photography, jewelry-making and supplying her grandchildren with adorable wardrobes.

Her sense of humor was one-of-a-kind and will be missed by so many. From the time she wore a tuxedo to prom to her sarcastic blog posts, her wit provoked thought and offered a comedic take on even the most serious of subjects, including her own battle with cancer.

In addition to her husband, Mark, she leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Natasha and Geoff Crossan of Morristown, NJ, her grandchildren, Camille and Dashiell Crossan, her sister, Cathi Roberts Silvestri of Arlington, VA, her parents, Verna and David Roberts of Mt. Dora, FL and her grandmother, Janet Roberts of Rushville, IN. She will also be missed by her stepson, Jon Wayman, his wife Brittany, and their two children, Wellsley and William. She is preceded in death by her brother, David Wilson Roberts Jr.

The family invites Dina's friends to join them in a toast to the good times at a Celebration of Life service and reception at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 11th at the Elbow Room in Indianapolis. Charitable gifts in Dina's memory may be made to the IU Simon Cancer Center for cancer research (www.cancer.iu.edu/giving) or Indianapolis PFLAG (www.indypflag.org). Arrangements: Indiana Funeral Care.

Dina, The years I got to work with you here at Baker and Daniels were some of the best years. You were a special person. Always positive, friendly, and one who could easily make me laugh. You were sensible. What I liked most about you is that you were real. I will always miss you my friend.
