Thomas Alan Cooney

Thomas Alan Cooney, 27, Indianapolis, passed away at 11:27 pm, Wednesday, March 31, 2021. He was born in Kokomo on May 21, 1993 to Todd Cooney and Lesa (Hicks) Hofmeyer.

Thomas was a 2011 graduate of Northwestern High School in Kokomo and attended Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI. He worked for the City of Indianapolis at the animal shelter and was also a great chef at various eateries.

Thomas enjoyed time spent with family and was beloved by his nieces and nephews for fun and wild games. A friend to so many, he had an easy going, kind, gentle nature, and a quietly intelligent sense of humor. His love for animals was amazing.

He had an eye for beauty in unusual places and loved to capture a great sunset.

He was a friend to so many, a co-conspirator in sibling adventures, and a part of us who will be missed forever.

Tommy didn't get to experience the world, but the world got to experience Tommy.

Thomas is survived by his parents, Todd (Carol) Cooney and Lesa (Alan) Hofmeyer; sister, Alison (Daniel) Carraway; two brothers, Matthew (Mercier) Cooney and Kevin (Cally) Cooney; two stepbrothers, Miguel (Brooklynn) Salazar and Marcus (Jessica) Salazar; stepsister, Michala Salazar and beloved grandparents, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jerry Hicks and Royce 'Bud' Cooney.

A family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shirley & Stout Funeral Homes and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made in Thomas's memory to the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care Services Foundation at friendsofindyacc.org. Messages of condolences may be left at www.shirleyandstout.com.

Thomas was an amazing co-worker. He was a hard worker that never fell into the drama or stress our job brought at times. He was the example of a supervisor we needed for many years. He never had an issue booting up and cleaning an entire kennel, or jumping in to process adoptions with me. Let me say, neither of us had a clue what we were doing but we sure made the best of it until Diana came and rescued us...lol...

His calm, laid back personality was always present, even during the most chaotic times. The day he passed a few coworkers and myself joked that we could just hear him saying "Hey guys, it'll be okay, lets get back to work." In his calm, yet understanding, voice. His focus was always the animals, and that alone is beyond admirable.

The shelter isn't the same without you Thomas (especially since I have to pull my own angry dogs now...lol), and it never will be.

My blessings and condolences go out to your family. You will all be in my prayers.

I had the privilege of working with Thomas for over two years at the animal shelter and was constantly impressed by his genuine kindness and patience with every animal and person he encountered.

Thomas was known for being the person to go to if you need help with a scared (or scary!) dog. The animals in his care seemed to sense his inherent goodness and gentle nature and knew they could trust him. As a supervisor, Thomas faced every challenge, no matter how trying, with unbelievable grace and poise- he was the epitome of calm under pressure. I rarely saw him without a smile. His ability to remain positive (no matter what chaos was ensuing around him) or lighten the mood with a funny joke always helped fuel and motivate his team.

I imagine he carried these traits wherever he went and touched so many others' lives in the same way that he touched mine. Thomas was truly one of a kind and I am very thankful that I had the chance to get to know him.
