Harry Olds Obituary

Harry F. Olds

Harry F. Olds, 92, of West Lafayette, passed away in his home at 9:15 a.m. Monday, September 9, 2013. Born May 4, 1921 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Ivan F. and Ethel June (Burroughs) Olds. Harry was a 1939 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. While at Jefferson High School, Harry played varsity football for 4 years, lettering his senior year, played varsity baseball for 4 years, was in the Red and Black Review and was a member of the J-Club. He honorably served with the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. Harry earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Purdue University in 1951, his Masters degree in 1959, and earned 30 hours toward his Doctorate degree. While at Purdue, Harry played baseball and played both locally and in the U.S. Marine Corp. He also had a brief stint as a professional player for the St. Louis Browns (now the Baltimore Orioles).

Harry married Lois E. Hurst on April 19, 1947 in Rainsville, IN and she survives. He was a member of Congress St. United Methodist Church.

Harry spent 30 years as an educator. He taught at Montmorenci High School, Morgan Park Military Academy in Illinois, Salem High School and Sunnyside Jr. High. He served at Sunnyside Jr. High from 1959 to 1981 as a teacher, and 17 years as assistant principal and principal. He was always active in sports and coached as many as three sports at each school he taught in. While teaching English at Sunnyside, Harry coached Bronco, Pony, Colt and American Legion Baseball. He was a member of the State Principal's Association, State Teachers Association and Retired Teachers Association. As principal, he enjoyed serving as a member of the North Central Accreditation Committee for Colleges and High Schools. He was inducted to the Lafayette School Corporation's Wall of Fame in 1988, elected to the Loeb Stadium Wall of Fame in 2009 and the 2010 Jeff Alumni Hall of Fame. He had been the official scorer for the Colt World Series for over 20 years. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #11 and the Purdue Alumni Association and a longtime member and supporter of Jefferson Booster Club and Golden Broncho Club.

Upon his retirement from the LSC, he returned to baseball and served as an assistant coach to Purdue coach Dave Alexander. Harry and his wife, Lois, then moved to Lake Wales, FL for a number of years, where he spent time as a volunteer with youth baseball. Harry and Lois returned home to Lafayette several years ago and could be found, more often than not, supporting the Bronchos and Boilers at a variety of sporting events.

Surviving with his wife are their children, Rebecca Ann Tyson of Providence, KY and William Olds (wife, Jennifer) of Lafayette, and five grandchildren, Jim Olds (wife, Sarah) of Lafayette, Christen Olds of New York City, NY, Josh Edwards of Waynetown, Patty Hoover (husband, Claude) of Providence, KY, and PJ Tyson of Austin, TX.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Congress Street United Methodist Church. Funeral service at the church at 11 a.m. Friday with Rev. Glen Hulbert officiating. Burial to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Congress Street United Methodist Church or the donor's favorite charity. Not sure what to say?

Coach Olds definitely played a great roll and impact in my life. He teamed up with my father as my coach and tought me how to pitch... My fondest memory was him getting throw out of a game the umpires strike zone was different for me he would tell Harry and my father it was to prep me for high school... Well that didn't sit to well for Harry and after he had enough, he gave the ump what was on his mind calling him " Rabbitt Ears"! U are truly missed and seeing your pic brought up some great memories Ole buddy! I'll see u again Coach until then Rest In Peace. Much Love and respect Matthew Martin
