Judge Shirley A. Tolentino, 67, of Jersey City, went home to be with God on Sunday, October 31, 2010, surrounded by friends and family. Judge Tolentino lived a very illustrious life marked by many firsts and countless accomplishments. Following are just a few: Judge Tolentino was appointed to the Superior Court of the State of New Jersey on January 11, 1984. She was the first female appointed to that position. She had previously been appointed as the first female to the Jersey City Municipal Court in 1976. She was elevated in 1981 and became the first female Presiding Judge of the Jersey City Municipal Court. Judge Tolentino was born in Jersey City and graduated from Henry Snyder High School as an honor student. She received a scholarship to attend the College of Saint Elizabeth and graduated an honor student with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin. After graduating, she taught Latin and English and attended Seton Hall University School of Law. She was the only African American female in her class when she received her Juris Doctorate degree in 1971. In January of 1973, she was appointed as a Deputy Attorney General of the State of New Jersey where she remained until her appointment to the Jersey City Municipal Court in July of 1976. Judge Tolentino went on to receive a specialized Master of Laws Degree in Criminal Justice, from New York University Graduate School of Law in 1980. She regarded as one of her major accomplishments as a judge the fact that she was appointed to the original Coleman Commission, which later became the New Jersey Supreme Court TASK Force on Minorities appointed by Chief Justice Wilentz. Judge Tolentino served on that Commission for about 10 years and was Chair of its Sub-Committee on Juvenile Justice. She was also Chair of the Committee on Criminal Justice and Minority Defendants. Judge Tolentino was extremely proud of the monumental changes that have benefited not only minorities but also everyone who participates in the Justice System as a result of the major efforts of that TASK force. She had also served on the Supreme Court Committee on Criminal Practice. She had been a community activist since her early days as a lawyer and had served on many boards including the Jersey City Hudson County Urban League, St. Peter's College, St. Aloysius Academy, Hudson County C.Y.O., the Hudson County Girl Scouts Board, and the Visiting Homemakers Board of Hudson County. Her article "The Runaway Train" was published in the National Bar Association magazine, pgs. 20-22, Vol. 12 No.5, November/December 1998. In 1980, she joined the National Association of Women Judges and became its President in 1996-1997. She was a member of the Hudson County Bar, the Garden State Bar, and the American Bar Association. Judge Tolentino most recently served on the Board of Trustees for the College of Saint Elizabeth and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the College in 1980. Judge Tolentino was named in Johnson's Publications' "1,000 Successful Blacks." She was a member of the North Jersey Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and The Girlfriends-New Jersey Chapter. She had served as the National Parliamentarian from 1998 to 2002. She served another term as Parliamentarian from 2004 to 2006. Judge Tolentino was elected as their National President in May of 2008. Judge Tolentino was also a member of the Links, Inc. another national organization whose purposes are friendship and service. She was also the Immediate Past President of the North Jersey Chapter of Links. Inc. She was also a Jersey Journal Woman of Achievement and received the Whitney M. Young Award from the Hudson City Urban League and had received many other awards from organizations, schools, and colleges too numerous to mention. She had also served as the Grand Marshal of the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. Judge Tolentino presented a program at Seton Hall Law School in December 2001 called the Color of Justice sponsored by The National Association of Women Judges, which encourages female high school students of color to pursue a legal career. She presented the same program at Rutgers Law School in April 2002, and has encouraged and participated in the presentation of the program at New Jersey City University and Rutgers Law School in Camden in 2003. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Ernesto Tolentino, two daughters, Ana-Ramona Tolentino, an attorney, and Candida Tolentino, an actress and founder of the healthy packaged foods company, Earth Cafe Living Foods. She has one grandchild, Ramon Tolentino Flowers, a niece, Lisa K. Cohen, a nephew, Robert Perry, and many beloved and adored relatives and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Resurrection at St. Aloysius Church, 691 West Side Ave., Jersey City, New Jersey, on Thursday, November 4th from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., followed by a public viewing from 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. A Service of Remembrance will take place the following morning- Friday, November 5th at 10:00 a.m. sharp. Entombment will immediately follow. A charitable foundation has been set up in her name to benefit law students in need of scholarships. In lieu of flowers, donations of any size may be sent to the Hudson County Bar Foundation, c/o Patricia Moseley, in honor of Judge Tolentino. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. I met Judge Tolentino when I was a high school student at a Delta Sigma Theta awards ceremony in Montclair in 1993. I remembered her being so nice, friendly, jovial, sweet, and kind. I stayed in contact with her because I saw her as a role model. She responded to a letter I wrote her, and even called. After reading her obituary above and learning about how busy she was, makes it all the more special that she took the time out to respond to me. I met her only once but she made an impression. I am grateful for the opportunity.

Please accept my sincere sympathies. I served as Judge Tolentino's court reporter many times in the early to mid '90s. I remember many pleasant conversations. I particularly remember one day after a jury was picked and the remaining panel members were excused and the Court took a recess that a young woman stepped forward and asked if she could speak to the judge for a moment. She reminded the judge that she had appeared before her as a teenager, she had be hanging with the wrong crowd, and she had taken everything Judge Tolentino said to heart. She was proud to have recently graduated from college and starting her career, and appreciated the opportunity to thank her and let her know she made a difference in her life. That's the Shirley A. Tolentino I will always remember.

I am not there; I do not sleep.
