John was my best friend and sounding board. He lived with me and my dogs happily until he got sick. I last saw Popps in his new home the Saturday before he died. I was moving to Arizona and was in Texas on the road when I found out. John has testified to his mission in life and lived it out fully. I published an article on Johns life back in 2005 in the ChicagobTribune. He was a great help in critiquing my writing. John was an avid reader. My dog Trixie accompanied him on the couch everyday, all day as he read. I would ask Popps the encouraging word of the day... I have those written down for memorabilia. John loved to build models. He has mostly cars but made an airplane and hung it off the ceiling in his room. I had countless hours of joy just having him in my life. My book will be written about our story of survival. He is with the Lord now but his voice still speaks through his writing. He was a light in the darkness. My joy is complete knowing his greatest prayer was answered. John is also survived by Broozer, Trixie and Louie... his couch mates. He told me in a sticky note that there were too many amens and hallelujahs to count. That is my precious treasure. John's story will be told for years to come. I called him Popps and he called me Kidd. He always said, you can do it Kidd. I will never forget the mission statement he encouraged me to write. For now, Popps voice cannot be heard but the imprint on the heart will last forever. I am forever go grateful to have known him so well. My condolences to his girls... he was so proud of them. I am too. Sincerely, Kristen R. Thomas (aka Kidd).
