Mrs. Allen was the head of the Bookmobile
Department....my mother Eleanor Whitman worked
for her for several years. I worked as a page
in the bookmobile Department when I was 14 and 15. I rode the city bus from Loy Norrix H.S.
after school during the week. My main job was
to move the books on a cart from upstairs in
the department down to the bookmobile on a
rolling cart. I wore a brown smock so that I
did not get my school clothes dirty from the
books. Wayne Betterly was the drive.
At one time Bill Musselman was a student intern.
I graduated from Library School at Western
Michigan University in the 1980's and then
worked as a librarian for KPS for 32 years,
retiring in 2007.
Fond memories of Mrs. Allen.

To all the Allen "kids" -- What a beautifully written tribute to your mom. It truly captured her spirit that I came to know and love working as a high school page at the EBL in the turbulent 1960's. She was a role model to many of us on the eastside, encouraging and supporting us to pursue our dreams. I was so happy to stay in touch with her over the years, last visiting with her in 2008 (picture attached). As Dan so eloquently wrote, she left her mark on us with her kindness and patience. God has blessed us all through her presence.

Kathy and family

All the lovely things said of your mom are so true. We remember your family as good and fun neighbors. It seems so long ago but so clear in my mind.
I remember your mom also as one of my favorite visitors as I worked at Meijers. She was kindness always and with a beautiful smile.
I know it is such a loss for all of you, but I truly believe she will always be near you. Sending our love, the Mero family.
