McGowan, Deborah Deborah L. McGowan (Culp) age 54 went to heaven today, April 15, 2021. She was born November 20, 1966 in Kalamazoo, MI to Jerry Culp and Karen (Schreiner) Culp. Debbie died as a result of kidney failure. She was diagnosed in her early 20's with a disorder requiring ongoing medication. Decades later the medication was discovered to have destroyed her kidneys. This required many surgeries because of her need for dialysis. In spite of this, she always pushed on. She was grateful for everyone who helped her throughout her life. She wrote in one of her journals, "Overall, my wishes are to live less time and have more quality of life than to be kept alive artificially or to have treatments that cause me to suffer unnecessarily." Debbie always wanted to become a writer. She loved reading books. She was always writing her daily thoughts in journals. Debbie graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. She very much appreciated all of her family and many friends. When she was able to work earlier in life, she worked in retail. She loved the interaction with the customers and became friends with repeat ones. Debbie was a devout Christian and when she was unable to attend church, because of her illness, she enjoyed watching sermons on TV. She loved going to family gatherings. Her aunt said when she was younger, she was a "firecracker". Photos of Debbie always show her smiling. She loved sitting in her recliner watching the birds and squirrels eat at the feeders outside of the window. She especially liked watching the cardinals. Debbie leaves behind her husband of 20 years, Kevin McGowan and a fur baby named Bella. Also surviving is her father Jerry Culp, mother Karen (Schreiner) Culp and mother-in-law Karen McGowan. She has many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends that she appreciated and loved. She was preceded in death by her fur baby Chloe (in Nov.) , grandparents Margaret (Brooks) & Edgar Culp, and Marilynn (Miner) & Roy Schreiner. Debbie was cremated per her instructions. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. If you wish to make a donation in her name (pet food or other supplies) please do so at your local animal shelter. She loved her animal friends. The following is one of the passages in her Bible that Debbie had highlighted: Romans 12:12 "Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer."
