Sheriff's kindnesses remembered
BY DANA STRONGIN
The Wichita Eagle

He picked up tree limbs in people's yards after the ice storm.

If there was a pancake breakfast or potluck supper, he was probably there.

And his family has been a staple in Greenwood County law enforcement for decades.

Greenwood County Sheriff Matt Samuels, 42, was shot and killed while serving two warrants Wednesday in northeast Greenwood County.

Samuels' death shocked and saddened county residents, who said he was a good man and one of the friendliest people they'd ever known -- and they've known him for a long time.

Samuels grew up in Eureka, and was a talented wrestler and football player at the high school. He graduated in 1981.

Two years later, he married Tammy. Their daughter, Sharlee, is a sophomore at Eureka High School, and their son, Heath, is attending Washburn University in Topeka.

Samuels, an avid hunter, was president of the Kiwanis Club of Eureka and served as a district and county director of Special Olympics.

On Wednesday afternoon, Tammy Davis put up a sign at the Eureka Greenhouse telling the family that they were in everyone's thoughts.

"This is going to be really devastating," she said.

Samuels' experience with law enforcement started at home. His father, the late Charlie Samuels, was Greenwood County's sheriff until 1986.

Matt Samuels started working with his father in 1979 as a part-time jailer. He was elected sheriff in November 2000, and started his second four-year term just nine days before the shooting Wednesday.

Dick Clasen, editor and publisher of the Eureka Herald newspaper, said Samuels would have worked for a peaceful resolution to potential conflict.

"He's the type that would rather take care of a situation without confrontation, but if it needs to be done, he'll do it," he said.

Samuels loved working with kids, Clasen said. He set up a bicycle safety clinic and would help kids maneuver around obstacles and fix their bikes.

"He was like a teacher more than a sheriff," Eureka resident Mary Cook said. Children would run up to Samuels when they saw him coming.

Mary Ann Broyles, who works at the Eureka Senior Center, said one of the elderly ladies she drives around town would often talk about Samuels.

Samuels and his wife would check on the woman, their neighbor, and they even left their door unlocked for her during bad weather so she could escape her mobile home.

"He would do anything for you," said Dale Forcum, who works part time with Broyles.

Laura Barthlomew, wife of Undersheriff Kendel Barthlomew, and Virginia Pancow, wife of Deputy Jim Oakley, held hands as Samuels' death was confirmed at a news conference in the city building.

Their husbands were at the scene of the shooting Wednesday afternoon, they said, and it hurt -- to know about their county's loss, to know that their husbands could have been shot instead.

Pancow always tries to kiss her husband goodbye when he goes to work.

Because, she said, you never know -- that kiss could be the last.

i knew matt when we were kids, knew charlie, he was the sheriff when i was in eureka. matt was a happy-go-lucky kid. can't believe 5 years ago his life was taken from everyone. what a wonderful experience of love he offered so many, years before he was in a position to protect. just want to send family and friends a moment of silence of loving thoughts, remembering matt and the many lives he touched, his whole life.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Samuels family for the great void that has been left in their lives with the loss of Matt.

As a former resident of Eureka and a brother in Law Enforcement it pains me to hear of his cruel passing.

Matt was always kind to me when I was growing up.

The world remembers and now misses this defender.

I never knew him but reading these entries I can tell how many people really loved him. I especially love the entries by the young people that he interacted with as they came of age, how he was a real home-town guy when he pulled them over in their cars, real sweet & funny, exchanging friendly banter & telling them to slow down, be careful. Like a dad would do. Like my dad would have done if he had been a cop.

I have a friend in in Australia, a Koori aborigine who is one of Australia's national treasures. When my husband died she taught me this Koori word: Illabukamer'laiyuri. It means, "The spirit lives forever."

God walks with us and holds us up when we stumble because we cannot see through our tears. And when we stop and lie down sometimes because it hurts too much to go forward, He picks us up and carries us through to the other side of our pain.

Matt, I miss you so very much. I miss your laughs and smiles you always gave me. You were like the father I will never have. You always supported me and made me feel good when I was down. I will never forget when you came to my house one night while i was sick. You brought me sprite and m&ms and said it will make me better. To this day i still use sprite and m&ms when i am sick. Samuels Family,
I had the privilege of going through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center with Matt in 1987.(101st Basic) Even in the early stages of his law enforcement career, you could tell how much Matt loved the law and wanted to help people in his community. It was common knowledge that most of the officers would leave law enforcement within the first 5 years after graduation. I stuck it out almost 12 years before leaving active patrol and attending law school. I still maintained contacts with a number of my classmates and while I worked hard towards a law degree, I took just as much pride in watching my brothers in law enforcement grow and advance in their careers. I am proud of you Matt. Proud to have had the opportunity to know you. Proud to be able to tell others about the work you were doing making your part of Kansas a safer place for hard working, honest families. Matt, some officers will wander through a 30 year career and never make a difference. In the short time we were blessed by your life you MADE A DIFFERENCE! Rest in peace my brother and we will see you soon.

We miss you more and more everyday
It's not fair: the Good Lord took you away
We miss you every moment of every day
We miss you more than words can say
It's hard to believe you're gone
Makes your time here not seem so long
Why did you have to go?
Why didn't you say good-bye
All we can do is sit and cry
We miss you every night and day
But nothing can take away the pain
We wish you were here
So we can hold you
There are so many things
We never got to say
You're the part of our lives
That we never forget
We'll never forget you
You'll forever be on our minds
Till the end of time

In loving memory

I have been reflecting back alot over the 9 months that Matt was taken from us. It is truly something how you get so caught up in daily life and take for granted day to day contact with someone.

Just the other day I had a question come to mind that I would usually pick up the phone and call Matt about. I can only say this that Matt is a person that I will miss everyday for the rest of my life. He was truly a friend and friends and that is something that will never be taken away from because I still look up in the sky on those clear nights and talk with Matt. He was truly a hero in my mind and heart and I miss him more and more everyday.

What is amazing out of this is how strong Tammy has been. She truly a solid rock in this loss that I have found myself asking why I feel the way I do sometimes. Thank god for the family and friends that she has because they have been so great as well.

It is with great remorse that such a thing like this happen. I know that there is nothing that one can say to relieve the pain. Just know that it sounds as if Matt died doing what he loved to do. that is to serve and protect the community that he loved and lived in. I didn't know Matt, but I Do know the type man he was, A servant to his community and father and husband. I am sure he will be missed by all. I know that from what I have read about him he was indeed a rare man with a big heart and strong sense of purpose, something rare in todays world. God bless to all Matts family and friends..

The pain of losing a loved one never goes away, but it does get a bit easier to bear each day that goes by. My deepest wish is that the pain of the passing of Matt Samuels becomes easier to bear for his family, his friends and co-workers, and everyone whose live's he has touched. The last part of that obviously covers much ground. I myself have fond memories of joking with Matt when, as a teen, we used to sit on the hoods of our cars on the corner of Main st and River. Matt was never one to just sit in the car either, he'd get out and lean on his or sit on one of ours with us and talk for a bit. It kept us out of trouble, and gave us an opportunity to view law enforcement in a positive light. There is no better example for community policing on the face of the earth than the story of this great man. I hope that he remains and example to all others in the profession. We are the lucky ones, we knew him. We keep him alive for all those who did not, will not. He was wonderful in every way imaginable and my heart goes out to Tammy and her children. Please know that as I said before, while the pain never goes away, it will someday be easier to bear than it is this moment.
Sincerely,
Sharla Speer

Even today seeing his photo, it still seems impossible that this wonderful man can be gone. He and Tammy were the two people that Francis introduced me to first when we started dating. They accepted me and helped me meet others around town. There were many Friday nights spent around their table with others that had just dropped by to visit and were invited for dinner. Francis always called him Brother Matt so my children grew up knowing him as Uncle Matt. They couldn't have asked for a more kind, loving, caring man to be their uncle. He was a teacher of life's lessons, a mentor to many, someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to help you see a better way to handle life's situations as well as a loving father and husband and committed law man. We miss him dearly. Love, Sunni, Francis, Jaimie and Travis
